Informal document No. GRSP-37-21 (37th GRSP, 23-27 May 2005, agenda item A.5.) WorldSID Update Edmund Hautmann BMW Group On behalf of the WorldSID Task Group 37th GRSP Session Geneva, May 23rd-27th, 2005
Outline • WorldSID Performance • Injury Risk Curves • Documentation • WorldSID Support • Summary
WorldSID meets the ISO specifications • Biofidelity • Repeatability and reproducibility • Durability • Handling • Other performance specifications WorldSID Performance • Fully evaluated in more than 1000 tests worldwide
ES-2 4,6 ES-2 re 4,3 USDOT-SID 2,3 WorldSID Performance unacceptable marginal fair good excellent 0 2,6 4,4 6,5 8,6 10 • Highest ISO TR 9790 Biofidelity Rating for WorldSID 7,6 WorldSID
WorldSID Performance • “Humanlike” kinematics • Example: 201 pole test • Shoulder shrugs and flexes
WorldSID Performance • ES-2re shoulder rotates out of loadpath ES-2re Model 'A' WS Model 'A' ES-2re Model ‚D' WS Model ‚D'
WorldSID Performance • Improved injury risk prediction: example Abdomen Rib 1 Abdomen Rib 2 Abdominal Load Sum Abdomen Rib 1 Abdomen Rib 2 Abdominal Load Sum Displacement Displacement Displacement Displacement ES-2 ES-2re WorldSID threshold of injury risk
thorax rib 1 thorax rib 2 thorax rib 3 WorldSID Performance • WorldSID ribs better discriminate localized loading 60 50 40 DEFLECTION [mm] 30 20 10 0 ES-2re Model 'A' WS Model 'A' ES-2re Model 'D' WS Model 'D'
WorldSID Performance • Superior biofidelity • Superior injury assessment capability • Good repeatability • All components with CV less 7%, majority less than 5% • Good reproducibility • All components with CV less than 10%, majority less than 7% • Excellent handling • Favourable comments from all users • Gooddurability • No major damages during extensive testing
Injury Risk Curves • Draft ISO WG6 document • Intended for inclusion in ISO TR 12350: “Road vehicles - Injury risk curves to evaluate occupant protection in side impact“
ISO/DIS 15830 is publicly available Documentation • ISO/DIS 15830- Design and performance specifications for the WorldSID 50th percentile male side impact dummy • Part 1 - Terminology and rationale • Part 2 - Mechanical subsystems • Part 3 - Electronic subsystems • Part 4 - User´s manual • Documentation to support GTR
WorldSID Support • Worldwide use of production version since Sept. 2004 • NHTSA • Transport Canada • APROSYS • Industry and research laboratories around the globe • The world is gaining experience with WorldSID - emphasis is shifting from testing of to testing with the dummy
WorldSID Support • Alliance has submitted rulemaking petition for WorldSID to NHTSA • Alliance recommends to include WorldSID in Part 572, and to add WorldSID to FMVSS 214 • NHTSA currently evaluates WorldSID production version (as petitioned) • WorldSID Task Group is committed to provide information/data to support rulemaking
Summary • WorldSID development is completed • WorldSID is completely evaluated • meets all performance specifications • biofidelity exceeds by far that of existing mid male SID • Documentation is completed and publicly available • Injury risk curves are available WorldSID - best available tool to develop side impact protection for vehicle occupants
