Recap • Mesh Networks means many things • i.e. it solves many different problems • Rapidly developing solution space • Consider the space of mesh network applications • Explore thoroughly • Make a call on the high runner representative cases • Consider proposals for these • Make sure that the ESS Mesh Standard allows for extension/optimization to these cases and proposals Kevin Dick - Nortel Networks
A Few Definitions • Application • a particular type of user activity e.g. downloading a file, VoIP • Environment • deployment setting e.g. home, large office, outdoors etc. • Use Case • description of how an end user uses a system • includes an application in a deployment environment with details regarding the user activity e.g. surfing the web on a laptop at the airport • Usage Model • created to "cover" various use cases • provide a specification (more detail) of the applications and environment • intended to help define functional requirements and network / traffic simulations • aid in the subsequent development of evaluation and selection criteria • therefore used to evaluate the various technical proposals Kevin Dick - Nortel Networks
ESS Mesh Environments • In-Home (intra-room, room to room, indoor to outdoor) • Large multi-family dwelling • House to house • Small business • Medium to large enterprise • Corporations, hospitals, museums, retail, factories • Hot zones indoor • Airports, hotels, convention centers, shopping centers, libraries • Hot zones outdoor • University campus, amusement park, downtown • Community area networks • Residential IP access, municipal services, public safety • Etc. Kevin Dick - Nortel Networks
ESS Mesh Applications • Internet streaming video / audio • Internet file transfer • Email, web browsing, chat • VoIP • Content download (i.e. photo cameras) • Interactive gaming • Local file transfer, printing • Security cameras • Video-conferencing • NetMeeting, application / desktop sharing • Etc. Kevin Dick - Nortel Networks
ESS Mesh Usage Models Private Public Enterprise - accessibility - productivity - new applications Community Area Networks - wireless internet access - low cost infrastructure - scaleability In-Home / SOHO - convenience - accessibility - wire avoidance Hot-Zones - access - low cost infrastructure - broader coverage Kevin Dick - Nortel Networks
Define Usage Models FirstNext Worry About the Functional Reqt’s Functional Requirements • Bandwidth • Protocol (UDP, TCP) • Packet size • Delay • Packet error rate • RF channel models • Stationary or quasi-stationary APs • Coverage • Capacity • NW scope • QOS • Security • NW availability • NW management • Etc. Environment Applications In-Home/SOHO Enterprise Hot-Zones Community Area NWs Usage Models Kevin Dick - Nortel Networks
Way Forward • Develop ESS Mesh usage models (document) based on market-based use cases • Usage models are intended to help define the functional requirements and network / traffic simulations • Document will aid in the subsequent development of evaluation and selection criteria for ESS Mesh used to evaluate the various technical proposals Kevin Dick - Nortel Networks
