  1. ADVANCED SATELLITE APPLICATIONS FOR THE ADVANCED WEATHER INTERACTIVE PROCESSING SYSTEM (AWIPS) GIMPAP Report for the period January 2009 – June 2009PI: Jaime Daniels (NESDIS/ORA)CoPIs:Stephan Smith and Mamoudou Ba (NWS/MDL) Accomplishments during this period include: 1) Meetings. Monthly meetings were held with Mamoudou Ba of the NWS/MDL Decisions Aid Branch, to discuss status and aspects of ongoing work for this task. Visits will occur on an “as needed” basis. 2) Software Development Activity. Changes that were recommended during the code review were implemented. These changes include a separate function to read in the polygon information file, using Cartesian coordinates instead of latitude/longitude coordinates to compute the statistics from within the polygon, soft coding of the alert thresholds and data keys ( through the use of slide bars), eliminating one of the displayed alerts, sending a message to the screen if there is no data available and general code clean up. The decision tool was re-tested on the MDL test bed and was approved for Alpha testing in the field. A Users Guide was then created to help the forecaster navigate the tool. After which, the decision tool was distributed to three NWS field offices: Blacksburg WFO, Blacksburg Virginia, Northern Indiana WFO, Webster Indiana and Huntsville WFO, Huntsville Alabama for Alpha testing Future Activity 1)Apply recommendations of the field offices to the decision tool 2)Prepare for future installment of decision tool in the AWIPS II environment.

  2. Pre-convective Decision Tool Example for Lifted Indices at 18Z on July 28, 2009. Five polygons are displayed. The tool GUI (with slider bars) is on the left side of the image. In the left, bottom corner, is the time series analysis for a selected latitude/longitude (missing values are not plotted and color coded to indicate severe potential). Top center (with the yellow background) is the alert dialogue box.
