Humans have been creating art from their very beginning. We seem to have a natural human instinct to express ourselves. Prehistoric people did it through voice (songs and stories), through movement (dance), and through visual art.
Art from the Stone Age Prehistoric people made art, but very little has survived because much of it was made with natural materials like wood, clay, and bone. These things eventually decayed. They carved some things from stone, and more of these have survived.
Art as Magic • We think that prehistoric people probably used art as a form of magic. For example, this small stone sculpture was probably used as a charm to increase women’s fertility. It was made about 25,000 years ago. • A prehistoric fertility charm
Cave Paintings • The oldest known works of art are cave paintings found in Spain . They were created about 40,000 years ago.
Ancient paintings are found in caves throughout Europe. Archeologists think that they may have been made as a type of magic to ensure successful hunting.
These drawings of seals were made about 40,000 years ago in a cave in Spain.
Ancient architecture • Prehistoric people built monuments using large stones. The large stones are called megaliths. One type of megalithic structure is called a dolmen. • Example of a dolmen
Dolmens were made with large flat stones supported by other upright stones.
The best known megalithic structure is Stonehenge, in southern England.
It is not known who built Stonehenge, or why it was built. One theory is that it may have been used as a type of solar calendar because some of the stones align with sunrise on the summer solstice (the longest day of the year).
