Five-Finger Rule • Open to a page of the book. • Begin reading. • Each time you come to a word you don’t know, hold up 1 finger. • After you finish reading the page, check to see how many fingers you are holding up. • Too Easy: 0 - 1 fingers • Just Right: 2 - 3 fingers • Too Hard: 4 - 5 fingers
THE GOLDILOCKS TEST TOO EASY • Have you read it lots of times before? • Do you understand the story really well? • Do you know almost every word? • Can you read it smoothly? JUST RIGHT • Is this book new to you? • Do you understand a lot of the book? • Are there just a few words on a page that you don't know? • When you read, are some places smooth and some choppy? TOO HARD • Are there more than 5 words on a page that you don't know? • Are you confused about what is happening in most of this book? • When you read, does it sounds pretty choppy? • Is everyone else busy and unable to help you?
I PICK • I choose a book • Purpose: Why do I want to read the book? • Interest: Does it interest me? • Comprehend: Am I understanding what I am reading? • Know: I know most of the words!
The more you read…The more you learn!!!! Happy Reading!!!!
