El Escorial • Located: Madrid Philip II of Spain • Designed: chosen to honor Saint Lawrence & celebrate victory over Henry II (France) on 10 August 1557 (feast of St. Lawrence) • a. martyred: roasted to death on a gridiron • b. floor plan: gridiron to honor the saint • c. main building: palace & monastery (decades to build) • d. turn complex upside down: 4 corner legs and middle is the grill • e. bedrooms: Philip’s on the right & his wife’s on the left • each with window looking into the chapel
Assignment • Philip II of Spain (1556-1598) built the Escorial and Louis XIV of France (1643-1715) built Versailles. • Starting with the pictures of these palaces analyze the similarities and differences in the conception and practice of monarchy of these two kings.
