RADAR system design using software defined radio -KavyashreePilar EECS 725 Project 5/5/2014
Project Proposal • Understand the application of software radio to RADAR system design and implement a range detection RADAR with pulse compression. • Deliverables: • Literature review of SDR based RADARs • Simulink model to implement a range detection RADAR with pulse compression using Barker codes.
What is a Software Defined Radio (SDR)? • Radio communication system where most of the signal processing is done in software instead of using dedicated ICs in hardware.[1] • Typical hardware components like mixers, modulators/demodulators, amplifiers, detectors, etc. are replaced with software blocks.[2] Basic SDR [2] : • RF front end followed by A/D converter. • Signal processing is done on a general purpose microprocessor
Development tools and hardware • GNU Radio (open source) : • Modes of operation • In combination with low-cost external RF hardware • Simulation environment • GUI – predefined signal processing blocks (similar to simulink) • Custom module implementation • Programming languages supported – Python, C++ • USRP (Universal Software Radio Peripheral) [3] : • RF front end • High-speed ADC/DAC, FPGA, USB2 interface.
Advantages of SDR based RADAR/Communication systems • Flexibility of operation • Same hardware can be used to implement multiple functionalities • Software defined adaptive antennas • Adaptability to variable environment • Reconfigurable – Ex: filter specifications, modulation schemes, etc. • Reliable – performance doesn’t degrade due to ageing • Easy to upgrade • Low cost
SDR based RADAR system examples • SDR based Range detection RADAR (simulation model) [4]
