WHY? • Brain and mind disorders – 40% of all health related disabilities in Australia • Depression and dementia top two causes of disability in Australia • Health bill currently at $2.6 billion ( not incl. indirect financial costs) • Suicide leading cause of death 15-24 yrs • WHO prediction – 2020, cardio, then depression

  4. WHO? • Max Bennett – neuroscientist – Distinguished Chair, Ramaciotti Medal, Burnet Medal of Aust. Academy of Science • Ian Hickie – psychiatry – prizes for education, academic excellence, innovation, “Beyond Blue” • Simon Hawke – brain drain returnee from UK – CJD ( London Imperial College), Alberti Prize

  5. HOW? • $3m + building from Uni. Strategic Devel. • $1m external award to purchase micro PET scanner ( one of only few worldwide) • $2.8m raised in 2003 + $15m to come • Access to adjoining clinical trials centre

  6. FUTURE BMRI will directly benefit people whose lives have been affected by the common and debilitating forms of psychiatric and neurological disorders
