UK-MANs (2) • All 19 MANs represented • Who? • - Technocrats • - Executives • - Chairs • Diversity of expertise is a strength
UK-MANs (3) • What? • - negotiation of RPAN contract • - information interchange with UKERNA • - liaison with OFTEL on licensing issues • - development activities • Watch this space!
Regional Network Operators (RNOs) • Legally constituted bodies – companies or consortia • Manage JANET connectivity for the primary sites in their region • Operate under contract with UKERNA to deliver JANET SLA
Universities and Colleges Information Systems Association (UCISA) • - Members are institutions • - 98% of HE community • - Groups are primary focus of activity • - Dependent on immense voluntary effort • www.ucisa.ac.uk
Aims of UCISA • To identify and promote best practice through • conferences, seminars, workshops • collaboration between institutions • publications (mainly electronic) • promoting development and research • To inform and support policy-making processes on information systems, both nationally and within institutions
UCISA Groups • - CISG Corporate Information Systems • - NG Networking • - SDG Staff Development • - TLIG Teaching, Learning & Information • - IG Infrastructure
What’s UCISA doing about e-Science? • - Talks at Annual Conference • - Managers’ Forum • - Establishment of IG • - BUT only no. 16 in Top Concerns • http://www.ucisa.ac.uk/activities/surveys/tc/2004

What should central service in University do? • Personnel – Grid aware; bridge between IT services and e-Science • Resources – network, computational, middleware, access grid • Procedures – User authentication, authorisation; Registration Authority • Engage with GOSC
Issues • Startup – SRIF funds? • Sustaining – extra resources OR stop doing something else • Overheads – money from projects into augmenting the infrastructure – needs an internal procedure
Security • Virtual organisations are not real – where does buck stop? • “Trust at a distance” • Firewalls challenge diversity and throughput • General move to “default deny”
Resilience • 83% - have resilient backbone • 46% - extra resilience in links • 77% - have UPS at JANET access • 73% - implemented security policies that could impact e-Science
Conclusion • Partnership • - all service providers • - service and research groups
