  1. Product Design and Technology What to expect from this presentation • focus on Criteria 1–3 of the SAT • see a range of creative ways students have addressed these criteria – gain ideas! • keep you on track! • be inspired!

  2. School Assessed Task – SAT • Consists of • design folio • production and record of progress • evaluation report and Instructions/care label Contributes to 50% of Unit 3 & 4 Study Score *The SAT is moderated against the exam. It is important that you complete and understand each of the criteria so that you will do well on the exam.

  3. The product design process The SAT follows the product design process Criteria 1–3 covers from Step 1 through to Step 6 The folio tells a story with a beginning a middle and an end! How a good idea turned into a finished product.

  4. Criterion 1Skill in developing an end user/s’ profile, research, a design brief and evaluation criteria with reference to the product design factors • Includes the following folio items • end user profile • evidence of end user research e.g. interview • design brief • evaluation criteria suitable for design options and final product/s

  5. Criterion 1Skill in developing an end user/s’ profile, research, a design brief and evaluation criteria with reference to the product design factors • End user profile • key facts about end user/s • information is visual • key images and statistics

  6. Criterion 1 Skill in developing an end user/s’ profile, research, a design brief and evaluation criteria with reference to the product design factors • Research to develop end user profile • primary data • gathered from end user/s • e.g. response to letters/emails, interview, market research, questionnaire,

  7. Criterion 1 Skill in developing an end user/s’ profile, research, a design brief and evaluation criteria with reference to the product design factors • Research to develop end user profile • primary data • gathered from end user/s

  8. Criterion 1Skill in developing an end user/s’ profile, research, a design brief and evaluation criteria with reference to the product design factors • The design brief is critical to the entire product design process! • It should • outline the problem/context (it is NOT a description of the product) • give design direction • allow for creativity and innovation • be brief.

  9. Criterion 1 Skill in developing an end user/s’ profile, research, a design brief and evaluation criteria with reference to the product design factors • State what is the need/problem/ opportunity • Identify relevant product design factors • Extract constraints and considerations from the design brief

  10. Criterion 1Skill in developing an end user/s’ profile, research, a design brief and evaluation criteria with reference to the product design factors Evaluation criteria questions are written for the final product and design options Evaluation criteria is written in four parts

  11. Criterion 2Skill in conducting research and communicating developmental work • research of the need/problem/opportunity • visualisations • suggest show alongside research to communicate where ideas are coming from

  12. Criterion 2Skill in conducting research and communicating developmental work Research of the need/problem/opportunity should include: • design inspiration: especially from non-product areas • exploration of the design elements and principles • researching the issue/problem to be solved • any product design factor/s relevant to the brief Research should NOT be limited to just researching existing products, materials and joints/processes!

  13. Criterion 2Skill in conducting research and communicating developmental work Research of the problem/issue/opportunity/need • Use graphic organisersto plan direction of the research relevant to the brief • may show also evidence of creative design thinking • may also be used to structure analysis of information for critical design thinking

  14. Criterion 2 Skill in conducting research and communicating developmental work • Research of the need/problem/opportunity • design inspiration or direction: especially from non-product areas • e.g using mood boards (a collection of images that creates a ‘mood’ or ‘theme’) • NOTa collection of products/garments on a page

  15. Criterion 2 Skill in conducting research and communicating developmental work • Research of the need/problem/opportunity • primary research/data

  16. Criterion 2 Skill in conducting research and communicating developmental work CBD grid of Melbourne Yarn pattern to represent graffiti Graphic design found on Melbourne trams • Research of the need/problem/ opportunity • primary research/data

  17. Criterion 2Skill in conducting research and communicating developmental work • Research of the need/problem/ opportunity • primary research/data Material research in terms of cultural significance and aesthetics

  18. Criterion 2 Skill in conducting research and communicating developmental work • Visualisations • used to communicate developmental work • are not complete drawings • some drawings showing different views or parts of the garment

  19. Criterion 2 Skill inconducting research and communicating developmental work • Communicating developmental work using visualisations • visualisations showing a direct correlation to research

  20. Criterion 2 Skill in conducting research and communicating developmental work • Communicating developmental work using visualisations

  21. Criterion 2Skill in conducting research and communicating developmental work • Communicating developmental work using visualisations

  22. Criterion 3Skill in developing creative and innovative design options, and ability to gain end user/s feedback and justify preferred option • Consists of: • creative and innovative design options • end user/s feedback • preferred option justification

  23. Criterion 3 Skill in developing creative and innovative design options, and ability to gain end user/s feedback and justify preferred option Design option shows three views plus exploded view of a detail. Annotated to indicate intended materials and processes Lots of information to share with end user

  24. Criterion 3Skill in developing creative and innovative design options, and ability to gain end user/s feedback and justify preferred option • Feedback is gathered from multiple end users • qualitative (words) • quantitative (numbers)

  25. Criterion 3 Skill in developing creative and innovative design options, and ability to gain end user/s feedback and justify preferred option • Evidence of end user feedback must be present • can be shown with • research of need/problem/ opportunity and/or • visualisations/design options

  26. Criterion 3Skill in developing creative and innovative design options, and ability to gain end user/s feedback and justify preferred option End user feedback gathered about design options

  27. Criterion 3Skill in developing creative and innovative design options, and ability to gain end user/s feedback and justify preferred option End user feedback gathered by interview

  28. Criterion 3 Skill in developing creative and innovative design options, and ability to gain end user/s feedback and justify preferred option A final design is chosen based on end user feedback to the evaluation criteria. A justified statement is written that collates all the information. In some cases, the design may be modified based on responses.
