Why is mix important?. In the west, urban policy increasingly encourages mixed (tenure) development and gentrification (DETR, 1999, 2000; Smith, 2002; Lees, 2003). 3 main arguments:

4. So far studies from various parts of the world have shown that:
Little cross tenure social mixing in mixed tenure estates in Western European contexts, esp. UK and Netherlands (Kleinhans, 2004; Atkinson and Kintrea, 2000, 2001)
Scenarios of ‘Social tectonics’ found in gentrified areas: Gentrifiers tended to self segregate and only interact amongst themselves (Robson and Butler, 2001; Butler, 2003).
Others case studies also found little cross socio-economic class interaction between:
Dwellers of new middle-income infill redevelopments and adjacent social housing residents in downtown Montreal (Rose, 2004);
Gentrifiers and non-gentrifiers in poor Black neighbourhoods in NYC (Freeman, 2006),
Middle-income developments along the Thames with lower-income neighbours in adjacent neighbourhoods in London (Davidson, in-coming)
