20. Radiometric Dating • Radio active elements decay at a constant rate. • Only radio active material likepotassium or Uranium can be measured. • If a rock is not radio active it CAN NOT be dated using this method.

21. Radiometric Dating Their premise is: • If you know the % of radio active material to start, • and the rate of decay, • and the ending % of radio active material, • You can determine the length of time it has been decaying.

Other problems in determining how long the candle has been burning. • You don’t know how big the candle was when it started because we weren’t there • We weren’t there when the earth was created. • Did someone blow it out? • Did it drip wax & burn faster? • Has the earth stayed constant? • We know there was a flood.

27. To use radiometric dating, • Scientists have to make up a starting point. • It becomes obvious they are making up a starting point because everyone using this method comes up with a different date.

29. Radiometric Dating can be used if: • The beginning percentages of radioactive isotopes are known. • Any changes in decay are known.

30. Name a couple reasons we can’t date sedimentary rock using the radiometric dating method. • The radiometric dating method is inaccurate because we don’t know the start date. Why? • Sedimentary rock is made up of preexisting crushed rock. • Sedimentary rock is not made up of radioactive rock.

Radiocarbon Dating • Dates the carbon left in a dead animal. • The rate of carbon in a live animal is known so that does give us a starting date. • The rate of decay is known so we can measure the length of time. • When we find a plant or animal that is dead we can measure current amount of carbon to give us an estimated date.

33. Radiocarbon Dating • Works like water in a bucket with a hole in it. • As long as water is going in and out at the same rate we can know the start point.

37. C-14 C-14 C-14 C-12 & C-14 Radiocarbon Dating • C-12 to C-14 ratio remain the same as long as the animal is alive. • When the animal dies C-14 deteriorates & the ratio decreases at a constant rate. C-12 & C-14 C-14 is gone after about 25,000 years.

38. By calculating the ratio of C-12 to C-14 you can get an approximate age of the animal or plant.

What kinds of things would change the date result? • If the atmosphere was different than it is now (like before the flood) it would effect the rate of beginning C-14 levels. • The diet of the animal can give it higher & lower C-14 levels. • Things like rain, sun, freezing can effect the rate the C-14 leaves a dead animal.

40. However • At the rate C-14 decays in 25,000 years it will all be gone so we can get no dates larger than that.

43. Dating Fossils • Can you date fossils using the Radiometric Dating method. Why? • Can you use the Radiocarbon Dating method to date fossils? No • Fossils are “fossilized.” They are either an impression in a rock or a petrified remain of a plant or animal.

Instead, age can be determined from radioactive elements occurring within rock found in association with the fossils.” • They’re saying you date fossils by dating the sedimentary rock they’re found in. • Why is that not possible?

45. How do they date the sedimentary rock. • By the fossils they contain. • = confusion • = a circular reference.

46. How “they” date a fossil • By dating the fossils from the rock they find them in and dating the rock from the fossils they find in the rock they are free to make up dates. • This causes a lot of confusion. • In a spreadsheet this is called a circular reference and gives you an error.

47. Deductive reasoning. • Using the dating methods we just learned about, evidence, and common sense we can come up with the real dates.
