  4. Information is Everywhere

  5. Exercise • Get into groups of 4 with at least one person with a laptop or superphone. • Research the area of Seattle called “Lavilla”. Triangulate results! • Discuss • What strategies did you use? • What did you find? • What does it mean?

  6. The Information Age (Or…Did Leonardo Da Vinci and Jane Austen have this problem?) • Need for learners • Knowledge growth • Technology explosion • Flexible career paths • Changes in working conditions • Need for critical thinking skills and problems solving

What does it demand of people? • Knowing when they have a need for information • Identifying information needed to address a given problem or issue • Finding needed information and evaluating the information • Organizing the information • Using the information effectively to address the problem or issue at hand

A “New” Kind of Literacy • 1974 Zurkowski introduces Information Literacy • 1976 Burchinal introduces “new set of skills” at a library conference • 1980 Processes and models in K-12 and Higher Education • 1997 Behrens points out complexity • 1997 Bruce describes seven aspects of information literacy • 1999 Snyder develops fluency in technology (FIT) • 2000 and beyond • Some library backlash • Embraced by corporations and government • What do you think happens next?

  9. So what is it? • Is it about using technology? • Is it about people’s ability to work will with information and information sources? (C. Bruce) • Is it an amalgam of skills, attitudes and knowledge? (education view) • Is it simply a way of learning? (Kuhlthau)
