  1. KEY LITERARY AND VOCABULRY TERMS • EPIC • A long narrative poem that recounts the actions, adventures and travels of a heroic character. CHARACTERISTICS: • The main character or the protagonist is referred to as an Epic Hero

  2. CHARACTERISTICS OF EPIC CONTINUED • It is usually about a serious subject • The style is formal • It begins “in media res” • It involves supernatural beings (gods and monsters) and super human deeds • It usually contains extended similes

CHARACTERISTIS OF THE EPIC HERO • He is usually quasi-divine(part god part human) • He embarks on a long journey across continents or even the entire universe • The traditional Epic hero has supernatural strength • He is brave, witty, very confident and an experienced fighter • Usually, natural and supernatural beings test his bravery along his journey • He’s usually driven by his desire to save his nation or people

  4. 3. MYTH • A traditional story of anonymous origin that deals with gods, goddesses, heroes, and supernatural events. • Examples: Prometheus, Superman

  5. 4. ARCHETYPE • A prototype or model from which something is based. Example: Dr. Evil=Mini Me TYPES: • Character Archetypes 1. The Hero: usually sacrifices his life for his people or nation Examples: Jake Sully in “Avatar”=Perseus in “Clash of the Titans” • Iron Man • Hercules

  6. ARCHETYPE CONT. 2.. The Mentor: Helps or trains the hero; is usally an old man or woman Example Jackie Chan in “Karate Kid” to (Jayden Smith) 3. The Shadow: The antagonist or the character that opposes the hero. Example: Hades in “Clash of the Titans” 4. The Trickster: A clown, or a mischief maker; is either on the hero’s side or against him. Example: The Joker in “Dark Knight”

  7. Archetype Cont. B. Situation Archetypes • The quest: the search for someone or something/some talisman who or what will help resolve a problem or heal an ailment • The task: a superhuman feat that must be overcome • The initiation: a moment that propels an individual into maturity etc

  8. Archetype Cont. A Symbol is: • a word or an object that represents something else Examples: The Swastika = death, hatred, man’s inhumanity to man • Apple =Teacher • Cross = faith • Red Rose = love, beauty

  9. Archetype Cont. C. Symbolic Archetypes • Light vs. Darkness • Water vs. Desert • Heaven vs. Hell • Fire vs. Ice

  10. 6. CONFLICT • The problem or struggle in that the hero faces. TYPES: • Internal Conflict: struggle with one’s self (man Vrs self) • External Conflict: A struggle with a force outside one’s self ( man vrs man, man vrs nature, and man vrs society)
