Our Lady of Peace Krystine Jordan Mike Kelley Tiffany Swihart
Background • Affiliated with Christ the Servant Catholic Parish which also serves Saint Paul’s • The school is located in Canton • Currently houses 189 students • Principal Dr. Cavucci • http://christtheservantparish.org/olop-school.aspx
Situational Analysis • The school has been suffering from decreasing enrollment, as with many Catholic Schools • Price of tuition is always an issue in rough economic times
Hypothesis • Upon meeting with Dr. Cavucci the option for increasing enrollment that seemed most promising was educational choice.
Educational Choice • A state funded scholarship program • Available to children living in academic watch/emergency school districts • $4,250 or cost of tuition whichever is lower • Cap of 60,000 scholarships • Renewable • Requirements
Research • Exploratory research • Not much knowledge on topic • Wanted as much useful information as possible
Survey Development • Formed questions in a way to hide our hypothesis • Variety of question types • Nominal • Internal • Ratio • Open ended • Distribution method
Survey Questions • What financial aid do you receive?
Survey Questions • How did you learn about Financial Aid Opportunities?
Parent Comments • “No longer accepting Ed Choice Students- parents are not involved like “praying” parents. These students tend to be problems in the school. Some older teachers need to be replaced. Too many fundraisers- other schools do not do as many as OLOP. Not sure educations is where it should be, old books, lack of updated materials” • “My child has expressed the last several weeks that she is afraid to stay at OLOP next year because of some bullying that she has experienced over the last several weeks.” • “To increase membership might be better to allow people to make payments as opposed to having them forced to have the money automatically withdrawn from their bank account...” • “Father Lew and the administration (Dr. Cavucci) are wonderful! They have high academics and behavioral standards for their students. Also, the teachers are kind and well qualified.” • “... The 4th grade hurts the school’s image and needs extra attention.”
Recommendations • We feel that EdChoice is a valid way to increase enrollment at the school, however since there is a cap on how many students receive EdChoice it is important that all avenues are explored.
Reflection • The school was very cooperative and helpful. • Rate of return was good. • Helpful input. • Human constraints. • More possible questions.
