Stock Nomenclature Unit 7 Chapter 7
Naming Ionic Compounds • There are a few different ways to name chemicals. • Stock Nomenclature is used when a metal or polyatomic cation • Is bonded to a nonmetal or polyatomic anion. • (Nomenclature means a method of naming something.)
Rules for Stock Nomenclature • Always name the cation first. • If the charge of the cation is always the same, • Use the name directly from the periodic table or polyatomic ion chart: • Groups 1 & 2, • Aluminum, Zinc, Silver and • all Polyatomic ions.
Undecided Metals • If the cation can have more than one charge, • Use the name of the element from the periodic table • With a roman numeral in parenthesis to specify the charge of the cation. • Example: • MnCl3 Mn+3 = Manganese(III) • MnCl6 Mn+6 = Manganese(VI)
Roman Numeral Review • I • II • III • IV • V VI VII VIII IX X
Stock Naming for Anions • Always name the anion last. • If the anion is a single element: • Drop the final syllable(s) and • Add the “-ide” suffix. • If the anion is a polyatomic ion • Use the name of the polyatomic ion.
