Sweet Antinomianism I. Those with the antinomian mindset not only try and set Law and Grace as opposing opposites, they set Law and the Gospel as opposing opposites too A. Let us look at the definition of antinomianism again
Sweet Antinomianism Def: Antinomianism (from the Greekαnτι, "against" + nομος, "law"), or lawlessness in theology, is the idea that members of a particular religious group are under no obligation to obey the laws of ethics or morality as presented by religious authorities
Sweet Antinomianism B. SA is given out as kind and loving
Sweet Antinomianism C. Look at how the bad old Law is juxtaposed to kind loving Gospel 1. The Law says: Do and thou shalt live 2. The Gospel says: Live and thou shalt do a. How will just living have you “do” anything?
Sweet Antinomianism 3. How many Believers live an upright life, but never “do” anything for the Kingdom of GOD? 4. If you share the Gospel, you ARE doing something – it is called evangelism 5. When you donate food or clothing to the poor, you ARE doing something – it is called benevolence
Sweet Antinomianism 6. What is being misunderstood is that the “doing” for the Kingdom of GOD has NEVER engendered salvation or righteousness to anyone. 7. Adam, Noah, Enoch, Abraham, David and all the O/T saints received salvation by repentance of sins by the Grace of GOD, looking forward to the Cross
Sweet Antinomianism D. Look at how the bad old Law is juxtaposed to kind loving Gospel in the next saying 1. The Law says: Pay what thou owest 2. The Gospel says: I freely forgive thee all
Sweet Antinomianism 3. The error here is again putting two different things together; spiritual and physical 4. When the Law says pay what you owe, it is talking about physical debts a. If you borrow money or defraud someone, you must repay the physical debt before GOD will “Freely” forgive you spiritual debt 5. The Gospel says that our sins are freely forgiven; out spiritual debt is paid by the Cross (not your physical home mortgage).
Sweet Antinomianism E. Look at how the bad old Law is juxtaposed to kind loving Gospel in the third saying 1. The Law says: Do 2. The Gospel says: Done 3. The “Do: of the Law concerns physical acts of right actions AFTER salvation; since acts can never give you salvation 4. The “Done” of the Gospel is the work on the Cross for forgiveness of sins
Sweet Antinomianism F. Look at how the bad old Law is juxtaposed to the kind loving Gospel in the fourth saying 1. The Law says: The wages of sin is death 2. The Gospel says: The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. 3. Are not the wages of sin still death today? The Cross did not change sin to not-sin; it gave a way for forgiveness of sin when one repents
Sweet Antinomianism G. The whole point of SA is to say the Law has been done away with by Jesus H. They will never admit that it was the Son part of GOD that gave the Law to Moses on Mt Sinai J. They will never admit that a perfect GOD could not give anything else but a perfect Law
Sweet Antinomianism K. What does the Word of GOD say concerning the Law? Psalms 19:7-8 7 The Law of the LORD is perfect , converting the soul; The Testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; 8 The Statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; The Commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; NKJV
Sweet Antinomianism L. What did Saul/Paul say about the Law in the N/T? Romans 7:12 12 Therefore the Law is holy, and the Commandments holy and just and good . NKJV
Sweet Antinomianism II. Not even one Law of GOD was “done away with” on the Cross A. The Cross was NOT about annulling the Law, it was about paying the debt for the sins of us all Isaiah 53:5 But He was wounded for our transgressions , He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. NKJV
Sweet Antinomianism B. If the Law was done away with, there would be no need for the Cross 1. If you did away with the Law, the wages of sin would NOT be spiritual death 2. If you do away with the Law, there would be no sinners – for the Law defines what is or what is not sin in GOD’s eyes.
Sweet Antinomianism 3. The Law does not make people sin; it is there to describe what is sin so that you know what is required of you by GOD. 4. When we do sin, we have a way to remove the sin penalty: repentance and turning from sin actuates GOD’s Grace because of the sin debt being paid on the Cross by Messiah Jesus.
Sweet Antinomianism C. Is it really a choice between “Religion or Relationship” comparing the O/T and the N/T? 1. It seems to me that Enoch had “Relationship” in the O/T Genesis 5:24 And Enoch walked with God ; and he was not, for God took him. NKJV
Sweet Antinomianism D. It seems to me that Abraham had “Relationship” with GOD in the O/T. Isaiah 41:8 "But you, Israel, are My servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, The descendants of Abraham My friend . NKJV
Sweet Antinomianism E. It seems to me that Daniel, Noah and Job had a “Relationship” with GOD in the O/T Ezekiel 14:14 Even if these three men , Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they would deliver only themselves by their righteousness," says the Lord GOD. NKJV
Sweet Antinomianism 1. These three men are those chosen by GOD to be examples of righteous men 2. That is relationship, not formal religion
Sweet Antinomianism II. The “Hard Way” or “GOD’s Way”? A. The Law was and is GOD’s Way B. This antinomian cliché is trying to insinuate that the Law was not GOD’s Way! C. The Way of the Cross IS a yoke; but through Messiah it is an easy yoke D. However the yoke still exists
Sweet Antinomianism Matthew 11:30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light." NKJV The Hebrew Gospel of Matthew says: “Because my yoke is soft and my burden is easy.”
Sweet Antinomianism III. Separating Salvation from Rewards A. In Greek think it is: either A or B B. In Hebrew think it is: both A and B
Sweet Antinomianism C. There are no physical actions we can take that will earn us salvation 1. Salvation only comes by repentance and turning from sin by the power of GOD’s Grace 3. Grace gets you to heaven 2. But Grace issues no rewards in heaven
Sweet Antinomianism D. Our rewards in heaven are given to us by virtue of our righteous works for GOD on this earth 1. So good works have nothing to do with salvation 2. Good works have everything to do with rewards
