  1. RECYCLING The Benefits of Recycling Rasha Kazkaz, MPH student-Public Health Walden University PH 6165. Environmental Health Instructor: Dr. Shana Morrell Summer, 2009

  2. Let Us Protect Our Environment! • We can protect our environment and reduce the amounts of solid and hazardous waste • We can work together to reduce the amounts of plastic, papers, and soda cans • We can all help to make our environment healthy • Andy D Black. (2008). Reducing Global Warming by Recycling Products and Using Biodegradable Bags. Ezine@rticles. From http://www.ezinearticles.com/?Reducing-Global-Warming-by-Recycling-Products-and-Using- Biodegradable-Bags&id=1698375 •

  3. What Is Recycling? • Recycling means separating, collecting, and ultimately using a material that would have been thrown away. Much of the aluminum, glass, paper and steel used for packaging today is already recycled. That means these materials are reused, or remanufactured into new products. What is recycling?. (2006). Recycling works. From http://www.dep.state.pa.us/dep/deputate/airwaste/wm/recycle/Recywrks/recywrks1.htm

  4. The Benefits of Recycling • Removes pollution from waste stream • Reduces the use of raw materials • Reduces tree cutting • Saves money and energy Environmental Protection Agency (2006). Paper Recycling. Retrieved from http://www.epa.gov/waste/conserve/materials/paper/basics/index.htm

  5. More Benefits from Recycling • Recycling builds communities • Recycling creates jobs • Recycling builds a strong economy What is recycling?. (2006). 7 Benefits of Recycling. 6. The Importance of Recycling • Recycling reduces pollution and it helps in preventing global warming • Products that are manufactured from recycled products saves a lot of energy • Recycling saves space for waste disposal Why is Recycling Important ?. 7. What Is Recyclable? • Clear glass containers • Office papers • Aluminum • Steel cans • Plastic soda bottles, and plastic milk jugs • Detergent containers • Juice and food containers What Can be Recycled?. (2008). Recycling works. From: http://www.dep.state.pa.us/dep/deputate/airwaste/wm/recycle/Recywrks/recywrks2.htm

  9. The Impact of Plastic Wastes on the Environment • Plastic wastes are one of the main causes of ocean pollution • Marine animals eat plastic wastes by mistake • Plastic recycling is important to save oceans and marine life Plastic Continent: Plastic Recycling Overview. (2008). Retrieved from: http://buzzle.com/articles/plastic-continent-plastic-recycling-overview.html

  10. Plastic Products that can be Made from Recycled Plastic • Plastic bags, window frames, CD cases, garden furniture, office accessories, plumping pipes, toys, and carpets. • It is estimated about 6-8% of the solid wastes in the U.S. is plastic wastes. • Plastic wastes take 700 years to decompose and mix with the earth soil. 11. Facts About Plastic Recycling • Every one ton of recycled plastic saves the same amount of water used by one person in two months and about 2000 pounds of oil • In 2007, more than 325 million pounds of plastic containers were collected for recycling. In the same year more than 2.3 billion pounds of plastic bottles were recycled • In 2005, 504 material recovery facilities were processing 50,180 tons of recyclable collected materials per day • In recent years, plastic recycling has tripled in the U.S. Plastic recycling facts. 12. Paper Recycling • According to EPA , about 35% of municipal solid waste stream (MSW) is made up of paper. (EPA, 2006) • Paper makes up the largest portion of MSW and it is also one of the most recovered materials. Basic Information Details. Paper recycling. (2006). EPA. 13. The Importance of Paper Recycling • Conserves resources • Saves energy • Creates jobs • Supplies valuable raw materials to industry • Reduces the need for new landfills • Saves many trees in the forest from being cut down Why is it Important to Recycle Paper?. 14. How Can You Participate in Recycling? • You can contact the recycling centers in your area. They will give you special containers for recycling and they will tell you the weekly recycling time • Plastics and glass must be sorted by the number size that is marked inside the container triangle • Soda cans and plastic food containers must be washed to keep the insects away Mariette Mifflin.
