  1. Skule™ Academic Levy Fund Pierre Harfouche, VP-F 1T2 – 1T3October 25, 2012 Adapted fromRyan Bradley, VP-F 1T0 – 1T1

  2. Introduction • The Temporary Levy Fund was introduced in 1982 to increase the quality of our academic experience while studying at the University of Toronto. • This is done by providing departments with money to purchase laboratory or related equipment, with the student body’s approval.

  3. Where does it come from? • The funds are obtained through a voluntary contribution of $150 from each full time student enrolled in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. • This is then matched 50 cents on the dollar by the departments. • ~4,000 students  $600,000 + $300,000 from the Faculty

  4. Voluntary!? • Every two years, during the General Elections, all full time students can vote to cancel or renew the fund for another two years.

  5. Okay, so what am I paying for? • Over the past years the fund has helped pay for these improvements and more! • MIE Satellite PC Labs (MC 225, RS 303 and HA 411) • CHEM lab equipment for the enzymatic hydrolysis of starch • Signal generators for ECE • Pretty much a majority of new (30 years worth) teaching lab equipment

  6. How does the process work? • Each year departments will assess their academic needs. • They will then provide the Discipline Clubs with a formal request for equipment purchases. • They will also provide the Levy Fund Committee receipts from the previous year for review.

  7. How does the process work? • The Discipline clubs will review their requests and forward their recommendations on to the Levy Fund Committee. • This is when you, the students, can voice your opinion on how YOUR money is spent!

  8. So students have control? Yes

  9. How can I be heard? • Talk to your class rep! • Talk to your discipline club!

  10. So this is my money? Can I make a proposal? • Yes! • Since departments need to have their projects approved by you… • You need to have your project approved by the department • See a lab in need? Know of a good way to spend the money? Talk to your discipline club, department or your professors!

  11. So what’s can we make requests for? • Yes • Any capital expenditures for a lab (new experiments, upgrades, etc) • Academic space improvements (Computer Labs, Study Space, Library) • No • Common Room Social Improvements • Club Funding • Conference Funding

  12. So what? • This is YOUR money, and you should have a voice in how it is spent. • Your labs are good/bad because of people before you getting involved/not getting involved. • Make the best of your academic experience!
