09-08-14 • Turn in Do Nows • Lab Procedures • Please record today’s schedule & homework in your planner & answer the following on your Do Now sheet. • Explain the difference between qualitative & quantitative observations. Schedule Do Now • None Homework
09-08-14 Learning Objective I can write a detailed procedure for a lab investigation.
Which of the following are observations and which are inferences? • A man was fishing from a dock. • 2. The lighthouse is on land. • 3. There is a tackle box on the dock. • 4. A fish bit the dock. • 5. A man was eaten by a fish.
The Lab
Purpose/Problem Statement: • Do double stuf Oreos actually have twice as much filling as a regular Oreo?
Materials: • 1 double stuf Oreo • 1 regular Oreo • Triple-beam balance • Ruler • Calculator
Procedure: • Gather lab materials. • Carefully twist off one side of the cookie from both Oreos. • Measure the mass (g) of the cookie with no filling on it for both cookies using the balance. • Record the number of grams in the data table.
Procedure: • Measure the mass (g) of each cookie with the filling on it using the balance. • Record the number of grams in the data table. • Using a calculator, Calculate the mass of filling by subtracting the cookie mass (g) from the cookie + filling mass (g). • Record the difference (g) in the data table.
Procedure: • Record the results from 3 other groups. • Using a calculator, calculate the average mass (g) of filling and record this value in the data table. • Clean up!

09-09-14 Learning Objective I can correctly identify variables & write a hypothesis for a lab.
Identification of Variables: • Manipulated: Type of Oreo – double stuf or regular. • Responding: The mass (g) of the filling. • Controlled: • Triple-beam balance • Method used.
Hypothesis/Prediction • Write a hypothesis using the IF, THEN, BECAUSE format. • IF the filling of double stuf and regular Oreos is measured THEN the double stuf Oreo will have twice the amount of filling of the regular Oreo BECAUSE Nabisco isn’t allowed to falsely advertise their cookies.
