2. Agenda Review BadgerCat development
Presenting BadgerCat to users
BadgerCat and UB
3. Background on Wisconsin Group Catalog UW Libraries are Phase 1 participants in BadgerCat pilot project
More libraries will be given the option to join during phase 2, beginning July 2006
Initial contract with OCLC runs through June 2008.
4. Strategic Opportunities Provides an opportunity to create a state-wide catalog, based on OCLC holdings, that links to a wider world of resources
Capitalizes on our broad investment in OCLC
Provides a customized version of WorldCat to users for resource discovery and resource sharing

9. Scopes can be added. Are there any you would recommend? Additional scopes under consideration for phase 2 of the implementation:
Geographical

Libraries in Minnesota
UW Colleges
CIC Libraries
Jesuit Universities
10. The BadgerCat Database
Remember that technically there are now two databases, BadgerCat and WorldCat
11. Options for presenting BadgerCat to users The choice is yours based on your users’ needs.
Link separately to BadgerCat and WorldCat
Link to the database selection screen and let user select BadgerCat or WorldCat
Choose to default to one or the other
Choose to suppress one or the other
12. BadgerCat/WorldCat and UB UW System representatives met several times with OCLC staff to demonstrate UB functionality in the UW environment.
OCLC is strategically interested in developing resource sharing initiatives that utilize local systems
13. BadgerCat/WorldCat and UB Two goals:
Do not replace UB with Illiad (for resource sharing among the UW libraries) in the group catalog environment
Make the link from BadgerCat to UB as intuitive for the user as possible.
14. BadgerCat/WorldCat and UB OCLC agreed to investigate options for a “smart” link
User clicks “Get this item” button
Behind the scenes functionality using NCIP standards determines how user will get the item, through the local ILS or via Illiad.
We are not quite there yet, and we don’t know details about how this will ultimately work.
15. Three options available now 1. Deeplink to bib record in individual library catalog, check shelf status, place request
Advantages
Works now
Deeplinks using OCLC numbers work consistently to link to bib record (with no rekeying!)
Disadvantages
User self selects library, has to check shelf status
User has to know that by linking to a UW library, UB will be an option
16. Option 2 2. Interim solution for “smart button”
“Get this item” link in bib record
Available in May for deployment in BadgerCat
If item is held by a UW library, link takes user to simultaneous search
If item is not held by a UW library, link takes user to Illiad
17. Option 2 Advantages
First step in the development that we’ve asked OCLC to pursue regarding a truly “smart” button
Users are familiar with beginning with a simul search to initiate a UB request
Users don’t have to self-select libraries (as in option 1) to initiate a UB
Forces users to UB, helping to minimize the number of Illiad requests among UW libraries
Disadvantages
User has to use simul search and rekey a search
18. Option 2 UW Libraries can choose if they want to implement this option
If you decide to implement, OCLC will configure your BadgerCat autho
Decide by April 14
You must have the OpenURL Illiad link configured to employ this option
OCLC will provide the opportunity to opt in or out of this solution, most likely on a monthly basis
The link to Illiad under “External Resources” will not be suppressed
19. Option 3 Use SFX
Steve Elfstrand has developed a series of Z39.50 catalog lookups for SFX using ISSN and ISBN numbers
When deployed in WorldCat/BadgerCat, SFX menu will display links to UW libraries that own the item
User can then deeplink to catalog to place a UB request
20. Option 3 Advantages
Users are familiar with SFX functionality
If you set up these configurations in SFX, they will be beneficial in other databases that contain monographs (e.g. MLA Bibliography)
Disadvantages
Won’t work for items without ISBN or ISSN numbers; for videos, CDs, etc., WorldCat will indicate UW holdings but the SFX menu won’t
21. What will you do? Option 1 has always been available in WorldCat and is available as well in BadgerCat. Getting users to UB functionality is an instruction issue.
Implementing option 2 or 3 is a local campus choice.
22. Please check your UB configurations Configure UB to allow users to place a UB from an individual catalog
Steve Elfstrand will provide details
23. Next steps The implementation team will develop an assessment plan.
If you are interested in assisting with this assessment, contact Pat Wilkinson or Valerie Malzacher
24. That’s all for now
