ACSUG presentation (I) • The Agency for Quality Assurance in the Galician University System (ACSUG) was legally established on 30 January 2001 as a consortium between the Regional Government of Galicia and the three Galician universities. • ACSUG Mission • The fundamental mission of the Agency for Quality Assurance in the Galician University System (ACSUG) is to contribute to improving the quality of the Galician University System (SUG). To do so, it takes actions in the area of drafting reports, evaluation, certification and accreditation for the activities conducted by Galician universities, especially related to teaching, research, knowledge transfer and management. • ACSUG Vision • ACSUG aims to be a point of reference in guaranteeing the quality of the SUG Higher Education institutions, recognised in Galicia, Spain and internationally for its independence, transparency and credibility.

Galician University System (SUG) . Main characteristics 3 Universities: Santiago de Compostela (USC), A Coruña (UDC) and Vigo (UVI). • 7 campuses: • UDC: Campuses of A Coruña and Ferrol • USC: Campuses of Santiago de Compostela and Lugo • UVI: Campuses of Vigo, Ourense and Pontevedra • About 75000 students last academic year. • Degree courses offered in • the Galician University • System (SUG) by • branches of knowledge
JUSTIFICATION • Why ? • The quality of higher education can be translated in terms of insertion in the labour market. • To contribute towards improving the quality of training for graduates of the SUG. • Responsibility of the universities in terms of the employability of their graduates. • The design of the new study plans based on competences.
JUSTIFICATION • What for? • To improve the quality of the university courses offered in the SUG. • To provide a retrospective view of the graduates that makes it possible to detect the training and organisational needs of the institutions. • To improve the quality of the insertion of SUG graduates into the workplace. • To contribute towards improving the employability of future graduates.

METHODOLOGY • Selection of the population • Request for data from the universities of the USG • Stratified sampling • Field work: C.A.T.I system • Debugging, analysis and review of results • Production of reports: recipients, publicity and dissemination.
GENERAL OBJECTIVES • Discovering the opinion of graduates from the different degree courses in the USG on their employment situation. • Discovering the difficulties encountered in their incorporation into the job market. • Describing the behaviour, attitudes and opinions of graduates. • Contributing towards adapting the educational offer to the needs of the job market. • Establishing a means of obtaining information for forecasting the future development of the university.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES • Discovering the opinion of graduates on education and the university • Studying the level of use and efficiency of the different means of finding employment • Discovering the situation of the job market for different degrees • Discovering the opinion of graduates on the strong and weak points of the faculty or school where they studied, as well as needs for additional training • Discovering the situation of the job market for graduates from the USG and the features of working as professionals • Discovering the level of satisfaction of graduates with their jobs, if they work, and how far these meet the expectations they had while studying.

RESULTS: Percentage of SUG graduates who work Analysis of results based on areas of knowledge: Health Sciences, Sciences, Engineering and Architecture, Social and Legal Sciences I, Social and Legal Sciences II, Social and Legal Sciences III, Social and Legal Sciences IV, Arts and Humanities I and Arts and Humanities II.
RESULTS : Skills, knowledge and attitudes • “ competence is the ability to respond to demands and perform tasks in a suitable manner” (according to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development in the DESECO Definition and Selection of Competencies study, 1998) • “competence refers to the behaviour, skills, knowledge and attitudes which favour the correct performance of work and which the organisation is interested in developing or recognising in its collaborators with the aim of achieving the strategic goals of the company”
RESULTS: Skills, knowledge and attitudes • “…..a dynamic combination of attributes - with respect to knowledge and its application, to the attitudes and responsibilities - which describe the results of learning a specific programme, or how the students will be capable of fending for themselves on the completion of the educational process” • (According to the TUNING project, 2003)

OBJECTIVES • To estimate the potential demand for graduates by Galician SMEs in the short term Specific objectives • Finding out about the situation of Galician SMEs in relation to their university work • Studying the future demand for graduates in the Autonomous Region • Analysing the factors that contribute most towards the hiring of graduates: education required and competences and abilities valued by employers

CONCLUSIONS: graduates and employers • Graduates and employers : • Knowledge is considered as the foundation over which a professional future can be constructed, and competences, considered as personal skills, abilities and attitudes, are essential elements for professional development. • Skills, knowledge and attitudes most valued: • Problem solving ability • Working in a team capacity • Taking responsabilities • Written and oral communication skills • Graduates and employers: • The most valued competences by employers such as leadership skills and foreign language knowledge are those which are the least valued by graduates.
