Reviewing Figurative Language & Poetic Devices • For this unit we will be working with several different genres, but all rely on figurative language and rhetorical/poetic devices • Poetry • Short stories • Non-fiction pieces
Activity: Reviewing Figurative Language & Poetic Devices • Define your terms • Come up with a mnemonic device to help people remember the term • Find an example in literature, music, movies, advertising, etc. OR Write your own example
Format • Make a presentation in google docs • Feel free to use youtube clips, images, etc. Anything to help convey meaning and ensure understanding. • Presentations should last 5 minutes for all terms • I will be passing out the ClickShare devices. Make sure you’re all set up by your presentation time. • Share it with me (lparson@amdg.brebeuf.org) by the end of class
Terms • GROUP 1: metaphor, simile, hyperbole • GROUP 2: repetition, personification, symbolism • GROUP 3: alliteration, assonance, consonance • GROUP 4: end rhyme v. internal rhyme true rhyme v. slant rhyme • GROUP 5: allusion, anaphora, enjambment
Homework: • Whitman & Hughes poems • Follow all directions • It will be collected tomorrow. (Be sure to print neatly in ink or type & print by the beginning of class.) • WWW #48 Quiz on Thursday
