  5. What was it? • Time period after WW1- 1920’s and early 30’s • “Great Migration” • expanded cultural awareness / artistic and political expression for African Americans • “Jazz Age” • “The New Negro” • NAACP

  6. World War 1 • Time for blacks to prove their patriotism and worthiness for equal treatment • 13% of draftees, yet only 10% of population • Many stayed in France because of less racism • Veterans came home to increasing racial tensions • Whites feared black soldiers demanding equality

  7. “The Great Migration” Southern Conditions -Post Reconstruction- 1878 -“Jim Crow” racial segregation laws -Sharecropping -What do you think happens to many blacks?

  8. “The Chicago Defender” • Black weekly newspaper that used editorials, cartoons, and articles with blazing headlines to attract attention to the movement • Founded by Robert S. Abbott

  9. Defender Cartoons • after fifty years of continuing oppression following emancipation, Southern blacks were finally liberating themselves from white landlords and creditors by immigrating to northern cities, where jobs and education awaited them.

  10. “The Great Migration” Urban Conditions • Roughly 500,000 migrated from 1914-20 • Industrial opportunity generated by the war • Lived in slums and tenements • Were often looked down upon by Upper Class Northern Blacks • Intense racism and segregation from Northern Whites
