World War 1 • Time for blacks to prove their patriotism and worthiness for equal treatment • 13% of draftees, yet only 10% of population • Many stayed in France because of less racism • Veterans came home to increasing racial tensions • Whites feared black soldiers demanding equality

“The Chicago Defender” • Black weekly newspaper that used editorials, cartoons, and articles with blazing headlines to attract attention to the movement • Founded by Robert S. Abbott
Defender Cartoons • after fifty years of continuing oppression following emancipation, Southern blacks were finally liberating themselves from white landlords and creditors by immigrating to northern cities, where jobs and education awaited them.
