Why EMS • What is environment: • Surroundings in which an organization operates • Surroundings include • Air, Water, land, natural resources, flora, fauna, human and their interaction • Flora: Plants of a particular country, region or period (time) • Fauna: Animals of a particular region or period • Surroundings extend from within the organization to global system

Why EMS • First ask yourself these questions: • Is your organization required to comply environmental laws and regulation? • Are you looking at ways to improve your overall environmental performance? • Is your organizations environmental affairs pose significant liability? • Are you not taking charge of environmental obligations for lack of time and resources? • Do you know how to relate environmental objectives to business objectives?

Introduction to ISO • Name: • International Organization for Standardization • Organization de Normalization (Dutch) • ISO derived from Greek word ISOS meaning equal • Founded in 1946 • Worldwide federation of national standard bodies (Member bodies) • Standards are developed by Technical Committees • ISO/TC 207 Environmental Management • Member Bodies represent in technical committee
3. Emergence of EMS Standards • 1987 • QMS Standard ISO 9000 published in 1987 • Brundtland Commission report “Our Common Future” • World commission on Environment and Development • called for sustainable development • Need to balance environment protection and economic growth

Emergence of EMS Standards • 1991 • The business charter for sustainable development • By International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) • It had sixteen principles for environmental management that foster sustainable development • Strategic Advisory Group on Environment (SAGE) • 20 countries • 11 international organizations • Over 100 environmental experts • Defined basic requirements of a new to environmental related standards

Emergence of EMS Standards • 1992 • United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio De Janeriro • Also called Earth Summit or Rio Summit • Resulted in Agenda 21 and Rio Declaration • Agenda 21 :Comprehensive guidance document on sustainable development • Rio Declaration: Set of 27 principles to achieve sustainable development • British Standard Institution (BIS) published BS 7750 • Standard for Environmental management System
3. Introduction to ISO 14000 • 1993 • Eco-management and audit scheme adopted by EU • Voluntary implementation of EMS • January, TC 207 Environmental management Committee created • 1996 • ISO 14000 series published in September • 2004 • ISO 14000 series revised
