The Parable of the Prodigal Son • Key aspects of this story • Shameful for the family that the younger son left home. The younger son abandoned his obligation to care for his father. • By asking for his part in the inheritance he is saying to the father- ‘I wish you were dead’. • Jews were forbidden to even touch pigs. So to be feeding pigs for a job, would be shameful. • Dignified figures in the ancient world never ran. • After all that the son had done, the father still lavishes his son with love and forgiveness, which is the point of the story.
The Parable of the Prodigal Son • God is like the Father- Jesus story gives us a picture of what God’s love and forgiveness is like. • This is the model that Jesus took in his own ministry of welcoming outcasts and sinners • The Older Brother • “This son of yours”- wont even call him his brother. • “I have never disobeyed a single command of yours” • Jesus uses this story to criticize his opponents. • The Pharisees would boast about never disobeying a command of the law, yet they were blind to God’s forgiveness and mercy.
The Parable of the Prodigal Son • The Older Brother • The Pharisees were so focused on the wickedness of the the tax collectors and sinners they couldn’t see the healing and transformation Jesus brought about. • Perhaps this story also points to the difficulties that the early church had between Jew and Gentiles all sharing in God’s mercy.
