  2. Welcome to Back to School Night • Thank you for coming to Aston Elementary! • Messages to Mrs. Hosterman- index card in back • Letters and love from your child. • Please write back and leave note on desk. • Sign-up sheets in the back of the room.

  3. Student’s Day When your child comes into Room 102… • Opening Exercises -come straight to desk and put book bags on the back of the chair -unpack book bag- homework, notes, lunch boxes, yellow folder in their desks -exchange Take Home Books -supplies ready, pencils sharpened -bathroom, drinks -attendance, Lunch Count -assignment book filled in at the beginning of the day -assignment book goes into book bag and book bag goes into cubbies -yellow folder and take home books remain in the desk during the day so they can be used -students are reminded to put their yellow folder and take home books in their book bag at the end of the day. • Morning Meeting

  7. Lunch • Payment for lunch and/or snack can be paid on line or send to school. Any dollar amount may be put on a student’s account for lunch and/or snacks. • If paying on-line use www.cafeprepay.com • If sending payment to school (cash or check), please put payment in a plastic bag, envelope, or change purse with name, room number, & student’s lunch number. • Checks can be made out to Penn-Delco School District. • Reminders of account balances sent home or check the website (*fee for adding money through the website, free if sent into school) • Double Lunches

Dismissal • Please send in a note or email if … • Your child will be leaving early • Your child will be leaving by a different mode of transportation • Your child will be picked up by someone NOT on the list you provided *Please provide an absent note for all absences. * A note must be sent to the office for approval if a vacation is planned during school days.

  9. Reading • Shared Reading- whole group instructions • Guiding Reading- small group/instructional level • Phonics/Spelling • Centers independent reading, spelling, math, computers, social studies, science, listening centers, etc.

Writing • Writing Program- Being A Writer Building foundations for a Writing Community MINI LESSONS- ***Assessment.Writing Prompt • Focus : Point of the writing, topic • Content: Clear message, details • Organization: Grouping ideas together (time order, order of importance) • Conventions: Correct punctuation, grammar, spelling • Style: Uses figures of speech, sounds like a person

  11. Handwriting • Zaner-Blozer letter formation • Use of space/lines • Neatly done • Cursive in 3rd grade

  12. Math Our math program is called enVision. It is aligned to the Core Standards. These are the areas that will be covered in second grade: • Understanding Addition and Subtractions • Addition & Subtraction Strategies • Working with Equal Groups • Place Value to 100 • Mental Addition & Subtraction • Adding & Subtracting Two-Digit Numbers • Place Value to 1,000 • Three-Digit Addition and Subtraction • Geometry • Counting Money & Money • Measuring Length • Time, Graphs, and Data

  16. Homework Students will have homework in the following areas: • MATH A math homework packet will come home at the beginning of each math topic. Student are to do the front and back of the Topic page that is listed in their assignment book. • SPELLING A Spelling Menu and Spelling/Phonics notebook will come home on Wednesdays. Choose 1 item from the menu. • READING Students are expected to read for at least 15 minutes each night. Record a book read on the Monthly Recording Logs. Starting in October, two book reports will be given each month. ** Please check the assignment book each night to find the daily homework assignments.

  17. Homework- Spelling • Second grade spelling words will coincide with each of our weekly reading lessons in Journeys. • A pretest will be given at the beginning of each week. Weekly spelling list will be in the Spelling/Phonics book and will have a tab at the top of the page. • A spelling menu and the Spelling/Phonics notebook will come home on Wednesdays. Students can choose one item from the menu. If they choose a written activity from the menu, they can do it in the Spelling/Phonics notebook.

  18. Homework- Reading • Take Home Books (October-May) - your child will pick a “right fit” book each day - a monthly recording sheet will be given at the beginning of the month and collected at the end of each month - each night, have your child write the date & title of a book they read on the recording sheet - parents initial recording sheet each night - 2 book reports will be assigned each month- You and your child choose which THB to use to complete the reports

  19. Book It • If your child hands in their monthly recording sheet AND their 2 book reports at the end of each month, they will earn a coupon for a FREE personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut!!! (October-March)

Reading Counts… Incentive Reading Program Read Books=Earn Points • Books can be found in classroom library, school library, public library, or at home. • Check scholastic website to see if the book is a Reading Counts book- src.scholastic.com (NO www). • Quizzes must be taken at school (not at home). • Book must be present when taking the quiz. • Quizzes can be taken during computer time & during class time (sign up sheet). • Individual Reading Goal’s will be set.

  21. RAZ Kids • A note will come home when students can begin using RAZ kids. • This program can be used at home to help encourage children to read. • There is a testing component that can be used at home.

  22. Grades • Progress Report- if needed • Report Card P- Proficient 93-100% C- Continuing to Develop 84-92% B- Beginning to Develop 76-83% NYA- Not Yet Apparent 75%-below “Please sign” stamp will be on top of any test that should be signed and returned to school.

Report Cards Conferences: • December 9- afternoon only December 10- afternoon & evening • March 17- afternoons & evening (parent/teacher request) Report Cards: • December 9 & 10 (with conference) • March 17 (with conference) -If a conference is not scheduled, the report card will be sent home on 3/18. • June 28 (mailed)

  24. Conferences Please be sure to sign up for a conference time before you leave. If possible, only sign up for a night conference if it is a necessity. There are only a few night time slots!

ASTRO- Room 102’s Class Mascot • A note and a schedule will come home in October telling all about Astro’s visit. • Students should write about Astro’s adventures in the log that is sent home. • Return Astro, his bag, and the journal to school the following Monday, clean and ready for the next student

Field Trips Two field trips per year: • Winterthur Museum • Newlin Grist Mill Park • Money will be collected in one sum for trips and bus fees. • Before each field trip, a letter will come home with details about the trip. Information regarding chaperones will be included in this letter. • Permission slip will be provided. Please sign and return.

  28. Supplies • Thank you for sending in ALL the supplies! The supplies really help to keep us organized and support our classroom community. • We have an abundance of tissue (take home if you’d like). • We tend to run out of pencils and hand soap half-way through the year. A note will come home requesting these supplies when needed. • If you have access to plastic gloves and would like to donate them to our class, we can use them in the spring for our embryology unit.
