Why is important to set personal goals? • Goals keep us motivated to continue to work toward something • Goals help us to evaluate if we need to change our actions and/or behavior in order to meet the goals that we set • Goals help us to maintain focus and to stay on track
Remember the SMART approach to setting goals • S- specific • Well-defined • M- measurable • There is a way to check to see that you have met your goal • A- achievable • Something you are able to accomplish • R- rewarding • Something that makes you feel good about yourself when you achieve it • T- time-bound • A set time limit to achieve your goal
More about personal goals? • Personal goals differ from academic and career goals. • Academic goals are goals that address academic performance in your classes • Career goals include goals that address things such as: • The type of career path you would like to follow • The type of job you would like to have • The development of interests or skills • Personal goals are tailored to fit you and depend on the things in which you are interested and involved
Step 1 • Consider the things that you are involved in that you would like to set goals for: • Sports/Athletics • Clubs • Church • Hobbies • Relationships • Health • Anything else
Step 2 • Write at least 1 SMART goal from at least 3 areas. • Here is an example: • Area: Relationships • Goal: To spend more time with my grandmother • Action Plan: Call her and plan to visit her at least once a month • Time limit: Within the next 3 months I will have visited her at least 3 times
Step 3 • Place these goals in your advisory goal and revisit them in a reasonable amount of time to check your progress toward these goals
