  3. Physical Description • Athena wears the aegis, a goatskin shield which had a fringe of snakes. • A helmet and holds a shield with the Gorgon Medusa’s head

  4. Prominent qualities • She is the wisest of Olympians • She refrained from things such as intercourse and wine in order to preserve her wisdom and stay in a pure and wise condition. • She proved that Women are more than just home makers, they are strategists, wise, and pure. • She is fierce and brave in battle, but only fights when necessary. • She is very territorial and does not take disrespect lightly. • She is very competitive • Trustworthy

  6. Athena’s role on Mount. Olympus • Athena is the daughter of Zeus. One day she sprang full grown from Zeus's forehead, clad in battle armor. (has no mother) • She is the patroness of Athens. • She is Chief of the three virgin goddesses. • She was very much liked by Zeus and was aloud to use his thunderbolt.

The Legend of Athens • Athena and Poseidon competed to be the patron deity of Athens • Each offered a gift to the Athenians. • Poseidon offered a salt spring that gave the Athenians trade and control over the Mediterranean sea. • Athena offered an olive tree that provided wood, oil and food. • The Athenians chose Athena as their patron Goddess.

  8. How she affected the Greeks • She was seen as a role model for women in Greek cultures. She was the Female Power Goddess, that often inspired women to become more than just wives. • She was the Female Power Goddess because she believed women should be equal to men, not better ,but not worse.  • She helped man during war by providing battle wisdom • Athena is also the companion of heroes and is the goddess of heroic quest. ( Helped Hercules and Odysseus)

Modern Culture • Athena (Minerva) is the subject of the $50 1915-S Panama-Pacific commemorative coin. • A full-scale replica of the Parthenon has stood in Nashville, Tennessee, which is known as the Athens of the South. • The state seal of California contains an image of Athena kneeling next to a brown grizzly bear.  • She is the symbol of the Darmstadt University of Technology, Germany.  • The University of Lincoln has Athena as their logo • She is the symbol of the United States Women's Army Corp and was on their Unit Crest • Athena's Helmet is the central feature on the United States Military Academy crest.  • At Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, a statue of Athena resides in the Great Hall.
