What the test will be like: • Texts will be ones you haven’t studied or seen before • Two unseen texts: one poetry, one prose (could be from a short story, novel, essay, biography, etc.). They will either be complete, or extracts from a larger text. • Task: select ONE on which to write your commentary. • At HL, no guiding questions or guidelines.
Your task • First read for understanding • Examine how the writer has written the piece and what effects it creates. • Blend a personal response with your objective examination of the text.
Skills You Will Need: • Close reading with attention to details of language, patterns, tensions, structure, how the writer has constructed the piece and to what effect. • Knowledge of Close Reading Tools such as Color marking and the Commentary grid or Wheel • The ability to quickly read and make sense of a text, recognizing its most important features • The ability to apply your own literary understanding to the text based on all you have learned • The ability to organize your ideas quickly (outline)
Be aware that… • the texts have been chosen for good reasons…they will not present you with texts about which there’s nothing to say.
Reflection • What tools do you use when you are asked to do a close reading for a commentary? How do they help you? If you don’t use any tools, what is your strategy?
