Fireground Layout • Water Supply • NFPA 1403, 4.2.23.3* Separate sources shall be utilized for the supply of attack lines and backup lines in order to preclude the loss of both water supply sources at the same time.
Fireground Layout • Water Supply A.4.2.23.3 Reliability should be considered when determining what constitutes valid separate sources. The intent of this paragraph is to prevent the simultaneous loss of both attack lines and backup lines in the event of a pump or water supply failure. Where a public water supply system is used, two pumpers on two different hydrants should be used. Two pumpers drafting from the same pond or river also are appropriate, provided the source contains sufficient usable water.
