Shrinking Horizons is establishing a pre-school and a library as an annex to the new Araniko Secondary School (Bhaktapur). The new school is being built around the present school (picture), so classes may continue during the process. The annex is stage two. David discussing plans for the new pre-school and library with the headmaster, his staff and the contractor/builder.
All children in Nepal have the legal right to schooling. In practice this does not always work. Children of poorer family’s often have to work the fields, looking after goats and cows, and fetch water. If a family can only send one child to school, then the boy is chosen. Usually, when poor, both parents have to work, and the older sister has to look after her little brothers and sisters. She can not go to school!
Araniko Secondary School (near Bhaktapur) recognised this problem, and offered free day care for poorer family’s. The older sister could deliver the small ones to a safe and caring environment, and she could go to school! Wecame along, scraped the walls and floor. Put down new flooring/carpet and painted the room. Mattresses, toys and furniture came next. The school funds the pre-school teacher.
Proposed new pre-school (kinder garden), first floor, and school library on the second floor
The pre-school is for 50 children, allowing approx. 30 young girls to attend school, and the library is planned to serve 500 pupils. The land is secured, the architect drawings and calculations are complete, permission granted, and the builders are ready to start! We need 40.000 Euros to start building.
