  3. The Albany Plan • June 1754 • Albany, New York • Representatives from several British colonies • Written by Benjamin Franklin

  4. Why Meet? • British colonies wanted: • To discuss the threat of war • To find a way to defend themselves against the French • To persuade the Iroquois to support the British

  5. What was the Plan? • A plan for a united colonial government or “one general government” • How would a united government help the colonies? • Included 11 colonies • None of the colonies approved the plan! • Why do you think the colonies did not approve the plan?

  6. “Unite or Die” • Ben Franklin published it in the Pennsylvania Gazette in 1754 • Promoted the Albany Plan • America’s first political cartoon!!!!

  7. Significance of “Unite or Die” • Divided snake-Popular superstition that a dead snake could come back to life if the pieces were put together • Pieces of snake-One for each colony • What are the colonial abbreviations? G: Georgia SC: South Carolina NC: North Carolina V: Vermont NE: New England (these colonies were combined) • M: Maryland • P: Pennsylvania • NJ: New Jersey • NY: New York

Warning of “Unite or Die” • What warning does the cartoon present to the colonists? • If the colonies do not unite, they will end up dying in the war, just like the snake will die if the pieces are not united soon. • The colonies are only going to be able to present a strong defense against the French if they unite. • Do you think that Ben Franklin would have drawn a cartoon like this if there was not the threat of war with the French?

  9. What did you learn? Write one fact you learned today about the reason Ben Franklin create “Unite or Die.”

  10. Be Ben Franklin! • It’s your turn to create your own political cartoon in favor or against the Albany Plan. DUE MONDAY!!!!!! • Directions: • On the back of your guided-notes draw and color a political cartoon in support or against the Albany Plan of Union. • Use our analyzed notes of “Unite or Die” as a guide. • Make sure to include a clear idea of support or against the Albany Plan! • Make sure you have a picture, not just words!
