IBM - GCPC Meeting IBM Lotus® Sametime® Meeting Server Deployment and Administration GCPC 18 Nov 2008 Joe Scherpa Product Design Lead Michelle McDevittProduct Designer
IBM - GCPC Meeting Outline • Administration challenges today • How the new system console will address these issues • Overview of system console experience • Managing licenses • Setting policies • Viewing meeting room and server statistics
IBM - GCPC Meeting An Administrator's Current Situation • “No common location and interface” to find what is present in a community • “Manually maintains a list” of server and software information • “Need to enter the prerequisite” server information at each install time • “Manually configures resources” on the prerequisite server and make it ready for use • “Performs other miscellaneous manual steps” on the prerequisite servers • “No common, already established, tested information” storage available
IBM - GCPC Meeting What an Administrator Does Now • Duplicates settings during each product install in the Sametime product family • DB2 • WebSphere Application Server (WAS) • User Directories • HTTP Servers
Introducing the Solution.... • What gets laid down during installation of SSC? • Guided tasks • Predefined roles • Administrative configuration pages • After Install what can I do? • Login with “role based access” • Plan deployment across enterprise before installing • Use guided tasks • Change settings • Monitor user licenses • Administer user policy • The Sametime System Console (SSC) provides an easy administration and installation experience for common requirements across the Sametime product family. • Common web based administration and installation • Shared configuration for policy and access control • Centralized system to assist customers during deployment planning, roll out, and expansion IBM - GCPC Meeting
Personas used in upcoming slides TBD Line of Business Administrator Responsible for solving user line of business issues for meeting rooms, chat rooms, and broadcast tools. Focus on maintenance and management. Fred Adams Messaging and Collaboration Systems Administrator Responsible for managing the Sametime product family. Ida Engel Domino second line support Responsible for solving user issuesabout Lotus Notes, Sametime and the Domino directory, including managing IDs and passwords.
IBM - GCPC Meeting Sametime Server Console Launches After Installation Selecting the product name gets more information about the product or feature • Fred will see guided tasks that can be worked on independently from configuring servers (Connect to DB, configure user directory)
IBM - GCPC Meeting The SSC helps you Deploy and Configure Prerequisites • Guided tasks for registering prerequisite server information (eg. LDAP, DB2, Domino, HTTP Server etc.) • LDAP configuration • Host Name, Port, baseDN, bindDN, bindPwd etc. • LDAP SSL certificate • DB2 configuration • Host name, Port, DB name, User ID, User Pwd etc. • Domino configuration • Host name, port etc. • Mechanism to validate the prerequisite configuration information • Mechanism to upload and execute the remote DB commands • Extensible model to add any 3rd party prerequisite implementation in future
Guided Task to Locate/Create User Directory • Identify existing content server • Identify registered servers to pick connection (Domino Svr) • Directory Type Selection (if not found) • Access Type • Authenticated – Base DN • Anonymous Access • Identify where to start searching directory • Navigate user directory • Search filter • Policy • User attributes and group* • Dn* • Distinguishing attribute for duplicates* • E-mail* • Class to determine if a person • Ability to add multiple LDAP Server's configuration information IBM - GCPC Meeting
IBM - GCPC Meeting Fred Sees Associated Guided Tasks • Navigate between tasks to see data requirements • Inline help and description of tasks and subtasks
Guided Task for Meeting Server • Guided Task for Meeting Server • Select the type of node install (standalone/proxy/primary/DM) • Specify the Sametime Node configuration to reuse • Specify the community name and Community id • Connect to the user directory – launch guided task • Select one of the registered database server • Identify product specific settings • Attach the WAS server node configurations (cell name/node name/profile) • Specify meeting server Db name (scripts execute remotely) • May involve secondary content store for meeting slides and library content • Save the plan/deployment. Status set to “Ready for Deployment” IBM - GCPC Meeting
IBM - GCPC Meeting Fred Chooses to Configure the Meeting Server As Fred right clicks the server, he sees his options
IBM - GCPC Meeting Fred Releases the Mouse • Sametime Community Server is automatically added as a prerequisite to the Meeting server! • Fred will see all the associated prerequisite guided tasks such as setting up a user directory
IBM - GCPC Meeting Fred and Ida View the Status of Each Product Server Select the server to see status, configurations, topology. All servers show up in list if they are in one cell.
IBM - GCPC Meeting Fred Sees All Fred sees this full WAS navigator
IBM - GCPC Meeting Ida Sees a Filtered View Ida sees this navigator and may or may not have the View drop list depending on the number of products she supports
IBM - GCPC Meeting Centralized Policy Management • Create cross product policies • Create policies that apply to all or one product in the infrastructure • Aggregate policies to show policy attributes for all products • Set the value of several related policy attributes at once through the master setting feature. • Policy interface is dynamically generated based on policy templates – default and anonymous • Easy view of all policies that apply to users and groups
IBM - GCPC Meeting Changes in Policy Management • Old model – Inherited Policy • First policy that matched a user was combined with the default policy • Look for all policies applied to Bob and then compare it to the default for inheritance and overides. • New model - Weighted Policy • A new policy starts with the defaults defined in the template • When you assign policies, if a user ends up being assigned to more than one (most likely in the case of Groups) they will be given the policy with the "highest" weight • Eliminates confusion on how a particular policy item is derived • If bob is assigned to 'bobs.policy', all the admin has to do is review the "bobs.policy" document and all the settings are in one place – no comparison
IBM - GCPC Meeting Common Licensing Framework • Centrally manage licenses for all products in the Sametime infrastructure • Set the number of licenses available • Assign and revoke licenses assignments • Select a number of users or groups and assign them a license for any of the Sametime products at once • Licensing template model is the same as the Policy template model
IBM - GCPC Meeting Licenses Fred, Ida and a line of business administrator can monitor who has licenses per product
IBM - GCPC Meeting Server Statistics Fred and Ida can see the summary, usage and owners of meeting rooms
IBM - GCPC Meeting Meeting Room Statistics Do you like the model of having meeting room stats in ONE UI?
