Urban air pollution induced by traffic in Kaliningrad is increasing concern KALAIR is a LIFE-Third Countries project co-funded by EC designed to aid the city in the evaluation of abatement strategies for reducing air pollution caused by traffic - was implemented by ECAT in collaboration with ARIA Technologies during years 2007-2008
Scenarios of transport network development November 12, 2008 • Business as usual • Construction and renovation of bridges • Development of city road network and optimization of traffic flows • Improvement of public transport • Renewal and improvement of the Kaliningrad vehicle fleet • Improvement of fuel quality • Scenarios were developed with assistance of: • Transport Department; Committee of Architecture and Building (City District Administration “City of Kaliningrad”) - The Federal Inspection on Traffic Safety in Kaliningrad region

Objectives • to raise public awareness on city traffic • involvement of Kaliningrad citizens into the process of solving the problem of overloaded roads • to raise public awareness on environmental problems caused by transport • development of the alternative means of transport (bicycles) Transport problem could be successfully solved only in a bilateral way – authorities and citizens
Activities • Organisation of a seminar with participation of representatives of local authorities responsible for transport policy and ecology, representatives of municipal and private transport enterprises, representatives of NGOs, working in environmental and social fields. • Inviting of Mass Media representatives on all events, putting information before and after events on the Administration’s web-site, dissemination of the reports and other information between other municipalities of the region and city–partners interested in it. • “Move Together” Exhibition outside and inside the large trade centre “Europe” located in the city centre. • Design and publication of leaflets in order to attract public attention to the transport problems of the city and call upon to use alternative transport. • City cycle race on the first Sunday of September under the logo of “Move Together” project and coat of arms of Kaliningrad. The t-shirts with those emblems will be given for participants of the race. Mass media will be invited.
