  1. Green Industry Conference Bangkok, Thailand 3-5 October 2018 Ndivhuho Raphulu Director NCPC-SA

  2. What is an Eco-Industrial Park? ”A community of manufacturing and service businesses located together on common property. Member businesses seek enhanced environmental, economic, and social performance through collaboration in managing environmental and resource issues. By working together, the community of businesses seeks a collective benefit that is greater than the sum of individual benefits each company would realize by only optimizing its individual performance.” (Lowe, 2001)

  3. What are the characteristics of an eco-industrial park? • EIP are characterised by • improved the economic performance of participating firms, reducing to a minimum their negative impact on the community, environment and other interest groups. • Provision of competitive ground for industrial development, which is much more competitive, more efficient and much cleaner than traditional industrial parks. • Stimulation of industrial zones/parks into eco-industrial parks, where resource efficiency and environmental performance are optimized individually (by each industry) as well as collectively (through cooperation and resource exchanges between multiple industries). • EIP provide a valid and contemporary platform for improving resource productivity and environmental performance of existing and new industrial parks and economic development zones.

  4. What is the role of public-private partnerships in developing eco-industrial parks? • Public-Private partnerships play a vital role in promoting the concept of EIP where the application of EIP promote some additional benefits for all the interested parties – both public and private: • These include higher economic efficiency, the increase of competitiveness by applying efficient technologies, generation of additional revenues through positive regulations at community level, the creation of jobs, solving the conflict between economy and environment, diminishing the demand on the county infrastructure, decreasing the effects of pollution, using energy from regenerating sources and replacement materials. • The Eco parks can generate benefits both for the local-regional community as well as for the companies operating there; these benefits are given by the recovery of resources, more ecological production, lower environment taxes, high company productivity, government facilities, interaction system among the firms, etc.

  5. What are some success stories from eco-industrial parks and what factors contributed to their success? • Awaiting to see the results for EIPSA pilot

  6. Key benefits of Eco-Industrial Parks Reduced use of raw materials, water, energy and chemicals (toxic) Minimized green house gas emissions and release of pollutants Reduced waste through resource circularity Reduced economic, environmental, social risks Improved competitiveness and profitability Shared recycling facilities Creation of good-quality jobs Improved workers health and safety Increased quality of life for communities Better access to  new technologies and finances Beneficiaries Management Environment Industries Cities
