What Resources does Africa Have? • Africa is very rich in natural resources. • North Africa has large amounts of Petroleum. • West Africa has large amounts of wood. • South Africa has the majority of the world’s gold and gemstones. • Africa has an abundance of people that can be used for physical labor. (slaves)
How would these resources benefit Europe? • They could get the resources for free/cheap, then manufacture and sell them for a huge profit. • European Countries could get rich without using their own resources.
How did Racism play a role in colonization? • Europeans, the majority of which were white, believed they were superior to the Africans. • They wanted to make the Africans more like their own culture, since they believed the African cultures to be inferior.
What role did Religion play in Colonization? • Many Europeans were Christian, and the Churches wanted to spread their religion to the non-believers. • Many Africans followed traditional religions, and were polytheistic. • Missionaries were sent to Africa to convert Africans to Christianity. • The Missionaries did this not only for religion, but so these newly converted Christians would support Europe.
