  3. Why was there a struggle over the holy land? • 1095 – Byzantine Emperor asked Pope for help • Pope Urban II – sermon at Claremont in France asking people to go on a Crusade • Preachers travelled around Europe persuading people • Response = amazing • Why did they go?
