Answering multiple choice questions Reading Tasks
What Are They? • Multiple Choice questions occur after reading all types of reading selections (Graphic Texts (visuals), Informational Texts (factual information) and Narrative Texts (short stories with dialogue)) • You will be asked questions about the purpose of elements in the text, word choice, inferring character traits or motivations, text features, etc. • In other words, you can’t prepare for WHAT you will be asked, so you will need to prepare for HOW you will answer instead!
Some tips for success • Remember, you are asked to select the “best” or “most correct answer”…so some answers may have 2 or more answers that COULD be correct—you need to select the BEST one • If a question refers to a line in the selection (check the margin of the text for small line numbers), ALWAYS go back and check • Do the same for any direct quotations or specific details the questions ask about
More tips • As with most multiple choice questions, eliminate options that clearly AREN’T correct, then use the reading selection to help decide which remaining options are “best” • Re-read portions of the text as needed • As you record your answer in the bubble sheet, MAKE SURE you are filling in the bubble you want! • Don’t get overwhelmed—the writing tasks are worth a lot of marks, so ensure you don’t spend too much time on Multiple Choice questions
