Good Morning • Please come in and pick a table. • At least 2 people need to sit at each table. • Take a piece of purple paper out of the basket. • Trace your hand and cut it out. You can color/decorate the hand if you wish, but please leave room to write on the fingers and palm. Today: We will identify the components of the 5 E Model. I will create and share the 5E’s with my group.
“SPLASH” it’s the5 E Model! Let’s start this year with a SPLASH! We will identify the components of the 5 E Model. I will create and share the 5E’s with my group.
What is the 5E Model? • The 5 E is an instructional model based on learners building or constructing new ideas on top of their old ideas. • Each of the 5 E's describe a phase of learning. The 5 E's allow students and teachers to experience common activities, to use and build on prior knowledge and experience, to construct meaning, and to continually assess their understanding of a concept.
What do you know about the 5E? • Trace you hand on a piece of paper. • On each finger of your hand write the 5 E’s. • High five with someone at your table when you have all of your E’s!
5 E The Instructional Model • Based on Brain Research • The design of the 5E model can be traced back to the early 1900’s with Johann Herbart. • Also researchers Atkins and Karplus used the 5E Model in the late 1960’s. • TEKS Resource System Lessons use the 5E Model • Campus Expectation
Why do we use the 5E Model at BES? • Our kids come to class with many ideas about how and why things work. If we do not engage students they may fail to understand and explore new information.
Table Groups • You will become the expert. • Use your technology to research your topic. • Be prepared to share out with the group in about 10-15 minutes. • You can create a visual if you like or use technology (but you do not have to!)
Engage • How do we focus students’ attention and stimulate their thinking to access prior knowledge? • Students will ask questions such as : • Why did this happen? • What do I already know about this? • What have I found out about this? • Students will show interest in the topic. • Demonstrate • Reading • Free Write • Analyze a Thinking Map • Brainstorm
I used to think, but now I know • Write down what you used to think about engaging learners, and what you now know. • How has your thinking changed over time?
Explore • Students need activities that give them time to: • Think and investigate • Read a resource to collect information • Make decisions • Problem solve • Construct a model
Go-Around • Go around your table and tell what you use in your classroom to allow students to explore a topic or concept.
Explain • Students need activities which allow them to analyze their exploration. Student’s understanding is clarified and modified through reflective activities. • Analyze and Explain • Support ideas with evidence • Thinking Maps • Questioning • Reading and Discussion • Teacher Explanations • Compare, Classify and Analyze
Flag it • On a sticky note write down an exciting way that students in your class explain their thinking.
Elaborate • Students must have activities which expand and solidifies their thinking and how it applies to real-world situations. This is done through: • Problem solving • Decision making • Inquiry
Ticket Out • On an index card write down a few different ways that students elaborate in your class.
Evaluate Activity which allows the teacher and student to assess student performance and/or understandings of concepts, skills, processes, and applications. • Any of the Previous Activities • Develop a Scoring Tool or Rubric • Performance Assessment • Produce a Product • Journal Entry • Portfolio
3*2*1 • Consider what you have learned by responding to the following prompt: 3: Things that they learned today 2: Things they want to know more about 1: Questions they you have.
Thank You! Enjoy the Year and don’t forget your 5 E’s! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfEcGkABK2A
