A plethora of technologies • Web-based • Computer-based • Virtual classrooms • Digital collaboration
Learning Outcomes • Describe the types of network, web-based and electronic communication technologies. • Describe advantages/disadvantages of online technologies
The key elements of online or e-learning: • Computer or mobile device • A network • The World Wide Web • Communication technologies
NETWORKS • Intranets/extranets • LAN, WAN, MAN, PAN, DAN, SAN, CAN! • Wireless networks
INTERNET THE MOTHER OF ALL WANs! A network that links computer networks all over the world
World Wide Web • World Wide Web - an information-sharing model that is built on top of the Internet. • Web site – collection of web pages • Web pages – individual HTML documents within a Web site • Web browser – software used to search the World Wide Web and access multimedia information on the Internet
What will your class be? Sychronous: • Students and instructors are online at the same time. Lectures, discussions, and presentations occur at a specific time; students must be online at that specific hour in order to participate. Asychronous: • Instructors provide materials, lectures, tests, and assignments that can be accessed at any time. Students may be given a timeframe – during which they need to connect, but overall, students are free to contribute whenever they choose.
Communication- Sychronous • Chat rooms • Voice or Voice over IP • Video Conferencing • Web Conferencing • Podcasts • Virtual Worlds
Communication - Asynchronous • Email • Virtual documents, audio files, video • Discussion boards • Blog • Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn • ePortfolios • DD/CD-ROM • Wikis • http://pbworks.com/content/supportcenter
The World at a Touch Advantages Disadvantages • Ease of communication • Access to large amounts of information at low incremental cost • Current and updatable materials • Expanded options for interaction among faculty and learners • Simultaneous and collaborative study • Effective technology can be expensive • Access to hardware and software may be limited • Instructional quality may suffer without face-to-face interaction • Results and learning outcomes may depend on teachers’ and students’ ability to use technology
Your Digital Classroom… • Each student has a computer or other communication device • You create a class website to manage class activities and communication.(LMS) • You create a class blog for class discussion. • You create a Wiki for real-time class activities. • Each student has a wireless mic to ensure clarity in teacher interaction. • You use a Smart Board for in-class collaborations. • You subscribe to Teacher Tube for online media presentations.
