Principal Meridians and Base Lines * The United States is broken up using Meridians and Base Lines * Townships are numbered based on their location relative to the base lines.
Township Numbering System • The town is given a Township number which represents its distance north or south from the base line.
Township Numbering System • The town is given a Range number that represents its distance east or west from the principal meridian.
Townships are Divided into Sections • Almost all Townships are divided into 36 sections. • Each section is 1 square mile in size. • This equates to 640 acres.
Sections are Divided into Quarters • Sections are divided into the northeast, southeast, southwest, northwest quarters. • Each quarter is divided into northeast, southeast, southwest, northwest quarters.
