  1. Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein(HVP) Who: Basic Food Flavors, Inc., in Las Vegas, NV When: February 12, 2010 is when FDA started Inspection. Recalled the HVP the company had made, in both powder and paste form, manufactured on or after Sept. 17. What: HVP is a flavor enhancer used in a wide variety of processed food products. Why: The investigation was triggered due to positive findings of Salmonella in the manufacturing facility. Management Issues Recognition of problem: • Basic Food Flavors became aware of the problem through proper salmonella testing procedures, however they continued to sell HVP for about a month after recognizing that there was a serious problem. Speed of response: • Basic Food Flavors recognized the problem in a very timely manor. • The scope of this recall has the potential to make it one of the largest recalls in history. • Due to the wide variety of things that HVP can be used for, the recall process is going to be a long process. Impact of Recall Reputation And Sales • It is assumed that Basic Food Flavor’s overall reputation has suffered due to this recall. • Although they have cause losses to many companies due to large amounts of recalled product, there has not been any reports of harm caused to the consumer. Legal Consequences • FDA inspectors found problems in the company’s manufacturing processes, including a lack of microbial- contamination control. • They also identified problems with the cleaning and sanitizing procedures of equipment and work areas where food meant for human consumption is processed.
