Weather Vocabulary air mass, air pressure, high pressure, low pressure, occluded front, stationary front, warm front, cold front, hurricane, tornado, thunderstorm
weather • changes each time a new air mass moves over an area. • describes the condition of the atmosphere at a specific time. • is always changing because of movement of air and moisture in the atmosphere.
air mass- • a large body of air that has the same properties throughout • can be warm, cool, wet, or dry depending the type of land or sea it passes over • sixth different types of air masses that affect our country
air pressure- the downward pressure exerted by the weight of the overlying atmosphere.
high pressure • an area where the air is slowly sinking • clouds don’t usually form when air is sinking • usually means good clear weather • usually pushed out toward areas of low pressure
low pressure • an area where the air is slowly rising • clouds often form in areas of low pressure • air masses move toward areas of low pressure • usually cloudy or rainy
front • area in which two types of air masses meet • includes both cold and warm air masses • high pressure system moves into a low-pressure system at a front • four types of fronts
occluded front A cold front overtakes a warm front. Changes with temperature, dew point temperature, wind direction, and wind shift often occur with an occluded front. It generally brings low temperatures, and light rains.
stationary front • warm air meets cool air and the masses do not have enough force to lift the • warm air over the cold • brings light winds and wet weather, sometimes lasting for several days
warm front The transition zone where a warm air mass overtakes and replaces a colder air mass.
cold front The transition zone where a colder air mass overtakes and replaces a warmer air mass.
hurricane Tropical cyclone, formed in the atmosphere over warm ocean areas, in which wind speeds reach 74 miles per hour or more and blow in a large spiral around a relatively calm center or "eye." Circulation is counter-clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.
tornado a violent, rotating column of air which is in contact with both the surface of the earth and a cumulonimbus cloud or, in rare cases, the base of a cumulus cloud. Tornadoes come in many sizes but are typically in the form of a visible condensation funnel, whose narrow end touches the earth and is often encircled by a cloud of debris.
thunderstorm a storm resulting from strong rising air currents; heavy rain or hail along with thunder and lightning
Mean- the average of a set of figures. Median- the middle value in a set of statistical values. Mode- a value that has the highest frequency within a set of values.
