Weather Vane and Wind Sock A weather vane is used to measure the direction of the wind. It tells which direction the wind is coming from, not which direction it is going to. A wind sock is also used to measure the direction of the wind. A compass is used to assess which direction the wind sock is pointing.
Anemometer This instrument is used to measure the speed of wind. As the wind moves over the anemometer, it spins. Wind speed is calculated by counting how many revolutions the colored cup makes in 60 seconds. 10 revolutions per minute is = to 1 mile an hour wind speeds. Example: 90 revolutions per minutes is = to 9 miles per hour wind speed
Thermometer This instrument measures the temperature of the air. The United Kingdom uses Celsius to measure temperature, but the United States uses Fahrenheit.
Rain Gauge This instrument collects rainfall. It can be used to measure how much precipitation there was over a certain period of time.
Barometer This instrument measures air pressure. Readings are usually between 28 and 32. High pressures mean clearer skies and low pressures mean rain is on the way.
