NSD-Idaho Core Science Primary Standards Earth and Space Science

This curriculum focuses on developing and using models to understand the Earth-sun-moon system, the cycling of Earth's materials and flow of energy, past plate motions, atmospheric and oceanic circulation, the impact of human population on Earth's systems, and factors causing the rise in global temperatures.

  1. NSD-Idaho Core Science Primary StandardsEarth and Space Science • ESS1-MS-1 ES Develop and use a model of the Earth-sun-moon system to describe the cyclic patterns of lunar phases, eclipses of the sun and moon, and seasons. • ESS2-MS-1 ES Develop a model to describe the cycling of Earth’s materials and flow of energy that drives this process. • ESS2-MS-3 ES Analyze and interpret data on the distribution of fossils and rocks, continental shapes, and seafloor structures to provide evidence of the past plate motions. • ESS2-MS-6 ES Develop and use a model to describe how unequal heating and rotation of the Earth cause patterns of atmospheric and oceanic circulation that determine regional climates. • ESS3-MS-4 ES Construct an argument supported by evidence for how increases in human population and per-capita consumption of natural resources impact earth's systems. • ESS3-MS-5 ES Ask questions to clarify evidence of the factors that have caused the rise in global temperatures over the past century.

  2. Definition of Mastery • Mastery – to be able to demonstrate/ model/ use aquired knowledge and/or skills of the standard without prompting or assistance from others.
