  1. Technology Session Introduction Birmingham 26th-27th July 2016 C. H. Shepherd-Themistocleous (RAL) C. Shepherd-Themistocleous, RAL

  2. Technology • New session for this meeting • Technology Roadmap part of PPAP remit • From Terms of Reference – “Develop and maintain a technology roadmap for their area of research” • Distinguish between • Detector systems developments for specific experiments • Specific technology developments that could be used in many experiments C. Shepherd-Themistocleous, RAL

  3. SB Questions • One of the question areas for the review is technology. Questions are: • What are the key technologies in your area where the UK is world leading and how do they generate benefit for the UK? • How could STFC support the development of critical technologies that will be essential to support the field in the future? C. Shepherd-Themistocleous, RAL

  4. Technology Funding • Current mechanisms are through PRD grants of 2 years or PPRP reviewed project grants for specific experiments. • Issue longer term support for particular technological developments. e.g. example today is CMOS sensors. • Question: Is it desirable to have an alternative mechanism for funding such activities? • Caveat: There is no more money. Flat cash is what we have in the near term. • Purpose of discussion session today. C. Shepherd-Themistocleous, RAL

  5. Talks today • Examples of technology areas where funding has been or could be separate from specific experiments. • CMOS Report – Fergus Wilson • Future computing – Pete Clarke • Example of application of technology developed within Particle Physics being applied elsewhere. • LSST – UlrikEgede C. Shepherd-Themistocleous, RAL
