  1. Enterprise Deployment of Google Earth WALIS Forum September 2006

  2. Welcome • Google Earth Enterprise • Google Earth in the NT: NT Visualiser • Google Earth architecture • Dissemination databases & SDI • Google Earth Fusion • Google Earth Server • Google Earth Enterprise Client • Demonstration • On the horizon • Questions

  3. Google Earth Enterprise • “A powerful solution for utilizing any form of geospatial data — imagery, terrain, features, vectors — in a high performance, interactive interface that accelerates and enhances decision making.” • Performance • No “click-and-wait” • Truly interactive interface • Tools for decision makers • End user is the priority • Consolidation of disparate data into a single view • Network distribution • Efficient exploitation of server resident GIS, imagery, terrain and other data

  4. Google Earth in the NT: NT Visualiser • Goal: to provide a means for displaying government-owned spatial information to a range of agencies in an easy to use interface • NTG evaluated in October 2004 & Purchased in January 2005 • Deployed in production in August 2006 • Branded as ‘NT Visualiser’ • Data: • Local data, shared on the SDI • ‘URL-based’ data • Project approach • Emergency Management • Land Information • Take-up: • Roughly 200 users so far • Land Administration, Natural Resources, EM

  5. Google Earth Enterprise Architecture • ‘Fused’ data sources • GE Fusion • GE Server (test) • GE Server (production) • GE Enterprise Client • Authentication target (ILIS) • ‘External’ data sources

  6. Dissemination databases & SDI

  7. Google Earth Fusion • Runs in Linux / X Windows • Concept of vector, imagery and terrain ‘databases’ • WGS84 Lat / Longs

  8. Google Earth Fusion: Pyramids

  9. Configure thematic rules and scale dependencies Attribute values can be used as parameters in balloon content Data sources: ESRI Shape TAB DGN GML CSV Google Earth Fusion: Vectors

  10. Google Earth Fusion: Imagery • Pixel by pixel masking at each level of the pyramid • Feathering around the edges of each pyramid • Mosaic made for all tiles at each level of the pyramid

  11. Google Earth Fusion: Terrain • Spherical TIN of world • DTMs extrude from the TIN • ‘DTM’ does not need to be restricted to a height attribute • Representations made at varying resolutions • Imagery draped over TIN at each level

  12. Google Earth Server • Runs on SUSE Linux • Apache 1.3 module • allows for hooks into authentication, logging, load balancing etc • Authentication to NT ILIS (Integrated Land Information System) • ILIS roles for different GE databases • EVHTML server • no longer supported • serves normal JPEG images and map navigation controls • used by custom NTLIS WMS connector

  13. Enterprise Client • Licensing: ability to use for work purposes • 50 concurrent-use licences • Target a local Google Earth Server • streamed local data • data quality • Extra functionality • all add-on modules • local datasets (TIFF / Shape / Tab / CSV) • local searches • authentication

  14. Live Demonstration • This is coming live over the public Internet

  15. Demonstration: WMS Connector

  16. Demonstration: WMS Connector

  17. Demonstration: WMS Connector

  18. On the Horizon.. • Manage increased take up • external users • More data • use a lever to obtain data and sustainable procedure from custodians • Higher resolution imagery and DEMS • 3D buildings from true ortho-rectified images • Future developments from Google: • Oracle Spatial support • better HTML server support

  19. Questions ? • Ivan Price • ivan.price@nt.gov.au • Phillip Rudd • phillip.rudd@nt.gov.au
