RIPARIAN RESTORATION SITE • annual temperature: * the hottest : 120 F * the coolest : 16 F • got support from: *the Arizona Water Protection Fund, *the U.S. Corps of Engineers *the City of Tucson
The Santa Cruz River • A dry platform • late 19th century: *the river was still flowing *an active watercourse that served • the region's agricultural needs
The Santa Cruz River cont. • Late 1940’s - riparian vegetation growing along the bank • Earth dividers were built about 20-30 feet high “after recent big flood”
THE RIPARIAN HABITAT Some vegetation is still seen along the course of the Santa Cruz river. The once mighty Santa Cruz River is seen here as a relatively small flow of water from effluent from the Tucson’s sewage treatment plants. Pictures taken on March 11th, 2004
