  1. Provenance What do you think of the idea of “provenance”? Provenance insulates a gallery from liability. If you can trace the possession of the work from the artist to the present owner, that is strong evidence that the artist created the work. Ron Spencer Unless you can document that ownership and ‘go back to mama,’ you’ve got a problem. Jeffrey Bergen

  2. Authenticity What is the art expert—Thomas Hoving’s—method for determining whether a painting is genuine? What is the International Foundation for Art Research (IFAR)’s method for determining authenticity? What is Peter Paul Biro’s Method for determining whether the painting is genuine?

  3. Authenticity Scientists are very interesting, but they come after the true connoisseurs. So fingerprints, all this stuff, is kind of that lovely what-if, but it’s not essential to the heart, to the artistic soul of the thing, and that has no Pollock soul or heart. Thomas Hoving The artworld doesn’t understand fingerprints, any more than it understands DNA. So you’re asking them to take what they don’t understand. Ron Spencer Thomas Hoving That could be the guy who cleaned out his room.

  4. If you can send somebody to the electric chair on fingerprints and test the blood on their clothes, DNA and all this other stuff, why in the hell can’t you do it on a piece of art? Teri Horton Connoisseurship is how the art market—how the artworld—decides on authenticity. Ron Spencer Well, the artworld and the justice system, they’re kind of two different worlds. Jeffrey Bergen There has to be a consensus behind the painting by ‘experts’ or you else could end up in a pile of problems. Jeffrey Bergen

  5. Authenticity What should count as compelling evidence in art authentication? Should it differ from what counts as compelling evidence in other fields? What would be the best general method for determining authenticity? Compare Horton’s case with that of the art dealer, Alan Stone, who bought a Pollock from a garbage dump. I challenge them to prove that it’s not a Jackson Pollock. Everybody’s saying, ‘Prove that it is.’ I’m saying, ‘Prove that it isn’t.’. Tod Volpe
